Can you explain what Jesus means when he says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Hi @technium, thank you for the question.
The punishment for sin is the hell. Hell is a God forsaken place. For Jesus to pay for our sins He had to go to hell. He however overcame satin and the hell and was resurrected, thus paving the way for our eternal life. That is how we know we have eternal life as Jesus already defeated satin and death.

While there are many good answers to that question, Jesus is also quoting Psalm 22, which starts "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Some time later, Psalm 22 also says "Dogs surround me; / a pack of evildoers closes in on me. / They have pierced my hands and my feet." and "they divide my garments among them; / for my clothing they cast lots."

Thus, by quoting the first line, Jesus points out that the whole of the Psalm points at Him.

Psalms 22 points to His Name. The four letters YHWH is used to replace the four letters meaning the Lord. In Hebrew those four letters 'Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey' Behold the hand Behold the nail. Some people refer to this as the Tetragrammaton. Here, in the name of Elohim , is the prophecy of our Elohim, Jesus the Christ, being crucified on the cross.
