Dünyada olup biten hemen her şeyi açıklama iddiasında olan büyük anlatılara öteden beri ilgi duymuşumdur. Tek tanrılı dinler, Marksizm, liberalizm, milliyetçilik, evrim teorisi, varoluşçuluk gibi büyük anlatılar, tek bir bilgi modeliyle günlük hayatımızı etkileyen hemen her şeyi açıklamaya adaydırlar. Kitleleri bunca etkilemeleri boşuna değildir, her biri dünyada olup bitenleri anlamak yolunda bizlere önemli bilgiler sağlar. 

Büyük anlatılar iyidir, hoştur ama bir taraftan da birbirleriyle çelişirler. Dönüp her bir büyük anlatının dayandığı felsefi temellere bakmak icap eder. Hayatlarımızın amacı ne olmalı? Tanrı'nın takdirini kazanmak mı? Dünyada eşitlikçi bir cennet kurmak mı? Zengin olmak mı? Ulusumuza hizmet etmek mi? İç yönelimlerimize uygun yaşamak mı? Kendimizi yeniden inşa etmeye çalışmak mı?

Büyük anlatıların felsefi zeminleri kaygan olduğundan felsefi kavramlar arasında yolunuzu kolayca kaybedebilirsiniz. Deney ve gözlemlere dayalı bir disiplin olan bilim gerçeği arama yolunda bana daha güvenilir bir rehbermiş gibi görünüyor. 

Bu uzun girizgahı kuantum fiziğine neden ilgi duyduğumu açıklamak için yaptım. Bilimdeki gelişmeler felsefeyi, felsefe dünyasındaki eğilimler günlük yaşantılarımızı etkiliyor. 19. yüzyılda Newton fiziği ve evrim teorisi gibi açıklayıcı bilgi çerçevelerinden yola çıkarak bazı aydınlar evrenin determinist olduğunu düşündüler. 20. yüzyılın başlarında filizlenip gelişen kuantum fiziği ise geleceğin bir ölçüde öngörülebilir olduğu bu akılcı evren düşüncesi konusunda kuşkular yarattı. 

Kuantum fiziği konusunda herhangi bir uzmanlığım bulunmuyor. Sizlerle paylaşacağım bilgiler konuyla ilgili okuduğum çok sayıda popüler bilim kitabından yaptığım derlemelerden oluşuyor.

Foton, elektron, nötron gibi küçük parçacıklar Newton fiziği yasalarına uygun bir biçimde hareket etmiyorlar. Maddelerin boyutu değiştiğinde onların hareketlerini tanımlayan yasaların da değişmesini garip buluyorum. Atom altı parçacıkların konumu ve momenti aynı anda ölçülemiyor. Bu parçacıklara dair ölçümler ancak istatistiksel bir dağılım çerçevesinde hesaplanabiliyor. Tekil parçacıklar bu çerçevede deterministik kurallara göre davranmamış oluyorlar. Bu bilinememezlik hali ölçüm ya da hesaplama yeteneklerimizden bağımsız bir durum. Atom altı parçacıkların doğası böyle. Gündelik hayatımızda bu durumun pratik bir  yansımasını görmüyoruz, çünkü parçacıklar toplu olarak ele alındıklarında hareketleri Newton fiziğinden alışık olduğumuz üzere öngörülebilir hale geliyor.

Atom altı parçacıkların bir diğer tuhaf özelliği parçacık mı dalga mı olduklarına karar veremiyor oluşumuz. Bazı hallerde tabancadan atılan bir kurşuna benzer biçimde parçacık gibi, bazı durumlarda suya atılan bir taşın çevresinde oluşan halkalara benzer biçimde dalga gibi davranıyorlar. Parçacık ya da dalga olduklarına dair aynı geçerlilikte birçok argüman ileri sürmek mümkün. Başka bir parçacıkla etkileşime girmedikleri durumda dalga gibi davranıyorlar, etkileşime girdikleri an sanki yerleri belirli hale geliyor ve parçacığa dönüşüyorlar. 

Meşhur çift yarık deneyinde fotonlar, üzerinde iki yarık olan bir levhaya doğru gönderiliyorlar. İki yarıktan geçen fotonlar arkadaki duvarda dalgalara has bir girişim deseni oluşturuyorlar. Aynı deney bu kez elektronlarla yapılıyor ve fonda oluşan girişim deseninin aynı olduğu yapılan ölçümlerden anlaşılıyor. İşler çift yarıklı levhaya tek bir elektron gönderildiğinde sarpa sarıyor. Tek elektron iki yarıktan birden geçip kendi kendisiyle girişim yaparak  yine aynı girişim desenini oluşturuyor.

Bir atom altı parçacık, herhangi bir  ölçüme tabi tutulmadığında dalga gibi davranarak belirli bir noktada değil belirli bir bölgede bulunuyor. Ölçüm yapıldığı anda dalga fonksiyonu çöküyor ve yeri noktasal hale geliyor. 

Kuantum dünyasının bir diğer tuhaf özelliği birbiriyle ilişkili hale gelen parçacıklarla ilgili. Kuantum dolaşıklığı adı verilen konsept ilişkili hale geldikten sonra birbirinden ayrılan iki elektron ya da foton çiftinin eşlenik davranışlarına dayanıyor. Gözlemlenen davranışlar elektron için spin, foton için polarizasyon olarak seçiliyor. Parçacıklar ne kadar uzakta olurlarsa olsunlar, zamandan ve mekandan bağımsız olarak eşlenik davranışları değişmiyor. Elektron çiftinin teki dünyada, diğeri evrenin diğer ucunda olsa da, dünyadaki elektronun spini incelenerek evrenin diğer ucundakinin durumu anlaşılabiliyor. 2008 yılında Isviçre telekom fiber iletişim hatlarını kullanarak aralarında yaklaşık 18 kilometre mesafe bulunan ve aynı kaynaktan gelen fotonların kuantum dolanıklık hızları ölçüldü ve ışık hızından en az 10.000 kat yüksek olduğu bulundu.

Bu tuhaf bilimsel gerçeklere rağmen ben bilimin özünde determinist olduğunu düşünüyorum. Kuantum dünyasının aklımızın sınırlarını zorlayan bu özellikleri kitlelerin zihnini bulandırmak ya da kısa yoldan para kazanmak isteyenlerce çokça kötüye kullanıldı. Kuantum dünyasına ilişkin gerçekler bizlere bilinmezci, mistik bir yolun kapılarını açmıyor, sadece evrenin işleyişine dair geleneksel görüşlerimizde ciddi eksiklikler olduğunu gösteriyor. 

Evrenin sırlarını anlamak için bilimsel ve felsefi gelişmeleri izlemeye devam edeceğiz.

I've been interested in the great narratives that claim to explain almost everything that's happening in the world. Great narratives, such as monotheistic religions, Marxism, liberalism, nationalism, evolution theory, existentialism, are candidates for explaining almost everything that affects our daily lives with a single model of knowledge. Each of these provides us important information to understand what is happening in the world. 

Great narratives are good, but on the one hand they are contradictive. Each great narrative has  philosophical foundations. What should be the purpose of our lives? Win God's appreciation? Build an equalist paradise in the world? Get rich? Serve our nation? Live in accordance with our internal orientation? Try to reinvent ourselves?

Because the philosophical grounds of great narratives are slippery, you can easily lose your way through philosophical concepts. Science, which is a discipline based on experiments and observations, seems to me to be a more reliable guide to the search for truth. 

I tried to explain why I'm interested in quantum physics. Developments in science and philosophy affect our daily lives. In the 19th century, some intellectuals thought the universe was determinist, based on descriptive information frameworks such as Newton physics and the theory of evolution. Quantum physics, which flourishing in the early 20th century, has created doubts about the idea of this rational universe, where the future is predictable to some extent. 

I have no expertise in quantum physics. The information I'm going to share with you is composed of a number of popular science books I've read about.

Small particles such as photons, electrons, neutrons do not act according to the laws of Newton physics. Changing the laws that define the movements of matter when the size of the items changes is bizarre. The position and momentum of subatomic particles cannot be measured at the same time. Measurements of these particles can only be made within the framework of a statistical distribution. Singular particles do not behave according to the deterministic rules in this context. This state of umbiguity is independent of our ability to measure or calculate. It's the nature of subatomic particles. We do not see a practical reflection of this situation in our everyday life, because when particles are taken in bulk, their movements become predictable as we are accustomed to Newton's physics.

Another peculiar characteristic of subatomic particles is that we can't decide whether they're particle or wave. In some cases, similar to a bullet thrown from a pistol, they act like particles. In some instances, similar to the rings formed around a stone thrown into the water. It is possible to find many arguments in the same validity that they are particles or waves. They act like waves when they're not interacting with another particle, and as soon as they interact, their position becomes specific and they turn into particles. 

In the famous double slot experiment, the photons are sent to a plate with two clefts on it. The photons passing through two slots form interference patterns in the wall behind them. The same experiment is done with electrons e and it is understood from the measurements that the interference pattern formed in the fund is the same. It becomes complicated when a single electron is sent to the double-slot plate. The single electron passes through two halves and makes the same interference pattern.

When an subatomic particle is not subjected to any measurement, it is in a specific area, not at a certain point, acting as a wave. As soon as the measurement is done, the wave function collapses and the location becomes a point. 

Another peculiar characteristic of the quantum world is about particles that have become related. The concept called quantum entanglement is based on the conical behaviour of two electrons or photon pairs separated from each other after becoming associated. The observed behaviour is the spin for the electron and the polarization for the photon. No matter how far apart the particles are, their unique behavior does not change, regardless of time and space. Even though the electron pair is on the Earth and the other is at the end of universe, the world is examined by the spin of the electron and the other end of the universe can be understood. In 2008, the quantum entanglement rates of photons from the same source were measured at a distance of about 18 kilometers between them using the communication lines of the Swiss telecom fiber, and at least 10,000 times higher than the speed of light was found.

Despite these bizarre scientific facts, I think that science is a determinist at its core. The traits of quantum world that pushes the boundaries of our minds were often abused by those who wanted to make money. The realities of the quantum world do not open the doors of an unknown, mystical path , but show that there are serious deficiencies in our traditional views of the functioning of the universe. 

We will continue to follow the scientific and philosophical developments to understand the secrets of the universe.
