It depends. I know many people who support others through those kinds of posts however, it is an opportuity for many and even though there might be some more deserving, they aren't necessarily known so, what then? If they aren't on that post and no one is willing to put their name forward? This is the problem though as most people who may deserve don't ask but at the same time, they probably should learn to ask also. 

The other problem with those kinds of posts as illustrations of the ecosystem is that one can't see who *isn't* there by choice. I think that in the time I have been here, I have never been on one of them for myself but, I have encouraged others to put their hand up to be considered and, have supported some in that too. 

Fairness is a strange animal because, it doesn't exist.
