Think of it like when you are voting for a politician in real life. The top 30 witnesses have to vote among themselves for new updates, and they are responsible for keeping the blockchain running smooth. @mahdiyari is running for a witness, so by voting you will give him/her more votes, potentially bumping @mahdiyari's spot on the witness list.
