I personally think that the real problem here is the follow trading. Just following someone just because they followed you seems a bit strange to me. If you don't like their content you're not gonna read/upvote it anyways.

Yes, this is true however the motive for these people is to earn something. If they are managing to get some dollars using these practices then they won't stop.

You have hit the nail on the head! A follow for a follow is the real problem. I did my first follow-for-a-follow today just for the sake of it, but many people do it on a regular basis as a matter of course.
