I'm having to look up old files, sometimes requiring Windows 2000 or XP! We have an ill relative, but as we visited recently I was able to visit my old lab. Unfortunately I didn't find a backup I'd hoped for, but I have other data. Our artificial substrates for cave research were needed because cave samples ranged from wet sand to pebbles! We designed and had made some 70% Nomex/30% limestone (or Ca13CO3) that were round beads about 3 mm in diameter. Those were placed in cave streams for one year and retrieved. Biofilm growth was observed by EM and analyzed by FAME (I had previously worked in DC White's lab) and DNA analysis.

Thanks for sharing this information. I have done a fair amount of labeling studies with plants fed with 13CO2 that have not yet been published but which I would like to eventually talk about here on steemit (maybe in a few weeks/months?) as they give good illustrations of the inter-connections between photosynthesis and amino acid metabolism in plants. These are good steemstem topics because they integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) ... the mathematics comes into play as one interprets the labeling data in terms of fluxes. It sounds like we are on the same page!

We were trying to show that cave bacteria were obtaining their carbon from inorganic carbonate in the absence of any organic matter. It should have been incorporated into lipids. Unfortunately that was never published or completed for Dr. White tragically died during the study.
