What an awesome place to visit\! Question: are temples like this easy to navigate \(including culturally \- like what to do at those pools\) without the benefit of a guide? Or are these types of destinations really best enjoyed and appreciated with a local to guide you?

It is easy. There are notice boards telling where people can go and can not go. You can ask locals or people at the temple of what to do. But it is going to be much easier if there is a guide that can explain what to do and why. Thanks for your comment.
