Ulog #3 - My most unusual talent - and why phrasing matters
I wrote a version of this post that was so poorly worded that I deleted it out of fear that I might get looked into by some government agency. After reading it a second time I was aghast at implications that I had never considered. Could your unusual talent get misinterpreted as possibly one of the most heinous crimes known to human kind?

Maybe this post will spark some interesting discussion. Or get me arrested.

<center>![got talent.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUmjoHiaB5noEkjajVGuaCmFETyG11uLoQFpkyX3dwHvg/got%20talent.png)</center><center>@phoenixwren's great contests have been getting hit pretty hard by low participation</center>

When I saw [this contest](https://steemit.com/contest/@phoenixwren/unusual-talent-contest#@phoenixwren/re-ecoinstant-re-phoenixwren-re-ecoinstant-re-phoenixwren-unusual-talent-contest-20180712t051238022z), I thought (what most people aparently think), 'I have talents but none of them are *unusual*'. But then life happened, and something that seems really normal to me became the subject of conversation among similar-aged adults. 'Oh my goodness', people said to each other, 'look at what that guy is doing!'

People were so amazed that they later commented me that I had 'an incredible vibe'. They joked that they could 'use one of me in their daily lives'. And I realized that I had found my unusual talent.

Are you ready to know what it is?

<center>![talking to children.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZC1To2AASteMvBJQYx9ptpbgpiq2ivjbMkxowjNEh8Ve/talking%20to%20children.jpg)</center><center>I have the ability to talk to children</center>

Perhaps you do not consider this a talent, but then you have not seen me do it. I also did not consider that speaking to children was a talent, or all that unusual, but it appears to be something that not everyone knows how to do. There are three basic steps to performing this talent at an intermediate level. I may touch on other advanced techniques in future posts.

1. Take it serious
2. Be honest
3. Listen

These seem pretty straight forward, but let's dive a little deeper into each one.

<center>![rural school math.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYzH2LX2nHkoAMawariE2TV4qNKFwxKhS7bbSw79YzWjr/rural%20school%20math.jpg)</center><center>Counting by 7's is as serious as anything you do all day</center>

Perhaps counter-intuitively, being a child is very serious. Every single experience, conversation and lesson will be foundational to their human experience in a way that an afternoon in your 30's can never be. To a child, whether they get this one silly question answered *is* actually life changing.

Too often adults take their generally meaningless 'work' much more seriously than the important considerations of a child. This strategy may come with its own benefits and drawbacks, but it is not the way to develop the ability to talk to children.

<center>![uncle beard.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeKitAwN74fVniE6sksRjUEf3U9JDFfBcVpGEbYxHqUTt/uncle%20beard.jpg)</center><center>Uncle Beard tells it like it is.</center>

When my niece was a baby, before she started talking, I would carry her around her apartment and describe everything I saw and what it was for. She listened intently as I described in incredible detail the inner workings of stoves and refrigerators to the best of my knowledge. I described ingredients and recipes, hobbies and activities, windows and beyond. I talked to her, honestly, for hours at a time.

I want to be clear here - there was no baby talk. Baby talk leads to brain damage, and I am not being ironic. Their little baby brains are soaking up everything while they frantically try to figure out this world around them, and each made up word or poor pronunciation is a red herring that can seriously stunt their development.

As they get older, avoid like the plague any and all lies, even the ones that are implicit in our culture. Santa was a 4th century Greek who liked to give out gifts, and we honor that each year at Christmas. You don't have to be dramatic about it, just don't lie.

<center>![Rural School pirates.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUNArVFm1dYCJ154XqKMX51eKkx27KP2UDsPUtHgtZyFv/Rural%20School%20pirates.jpg)</center><center>Seriously funny times</center>

The last step is to be sure to listen. Too often we talk on and on about whatever is on our minds without considering well who we are talking to or what they want or need to hear. With other adults we usually adjust to compensate for each other, but with children, we risk teaching them that we are not worth listening to if we don't listen to them.

In the earlier version of this article I played on the title of a TV show and called myself a 'child-whisperer'. There is no whispering involved, and there is nothing creepy to see here. But for little people to become big people, they need adults to show them how, by taking them seriously, listening and being honest with them.

Love and Light to All!

I love it! My brother is 13 years younger than me, and though he's a grown ass man now, growing up I was the one who would listen to him ramble on about dinosaurs or Pokemon or whatever was his interest at the time. My parents did not. Maybe he'd get "uh huh" type responses from them. So to this day he'll tell me a story about something, and my mom will say (sounding kinda jealous), "You never told me that!" Well yeah, Mom, you established pretty early that you're not interested, why would you think your adult kids would suddenly think you were? I think adults don't think about the lessons they teach kids sometimes. Like sure, maybe you're not interested in Pokemon, but your kid is so maybe at least care that they care. So good on you, I say!

This is it exactly. I *get* pokemon, but not necessarily everything. Digimon, for example, is still a mystery to me. I might say something like, 'Wow, that seems pretty complicated. I'm having trouble understanding which evolutions they can evolve into at any one time, are you sure there is a consistent logic?'

But most adults would have already purchased the game so they would stop talking (*to them*) about it. Parents, be sure your children's fantasy worlds have consistent logic, or we are all in for a heap of trouble when they grow up and run the government!

So great that you could be close with your brother! Thanks for hosting great contests :)

This is why I am great communicating with kids and most animals, but suck at talking with most adults!

Why?

Because with most adults, it's NOT a dialogue.

It's a "collective monologue" where no real listening takes place and each person is simply buying time until they can speak AT the other one!

Enjoyed your post immensely.

Namaste, Jaichai

>collective monologue

My favorite is when someone will accidentally start talking, stop, then later when it is actually their turn they start the same way. They were just holding in whatever they wanted to talk about!

I am officially through the prologue of Origin, taking the book camping this weekend, thanks for the recommendation!

Ojalá mejoramos con cada generación. Colombia, por ejemplo, está superando unas traumas generacionales muy severas. Es sumamente importante que analyzamos la manera en que criamos las proximas generaciones para acelerar ésta sanación.

almost everyday, i think about things i taught you and how i did it. if this was the right or wrong way, i didn't know because you were my first. then 30 years later, you come out with something so profound, my heart swells with pride. i remember when you were 3, i offered to take us to mac and dons supper club. you looked at me, and serious as a heart attack, you said, " actually dad, i'd rather have pizza"! so heres a 3 year old using a 4 syllable word, properly, in a sentence. i'd like to think i had something to do with your education, but you have so far out paced me. you make me proud every day.

You did pretty good if I do say so myself! I think the second half was a bit harder than the first, but there were many lessoned learned there too ;p.

I love you, and thank you.

Gave you an upvote from listening to PYPT today. I am a radical unschooling, unvaxxer, peaceful parent. Kudos for a good post!

Child speak is your superpower! I must say though, sadly these days, it is an unusual talent to communicate with children. And specifically to talk to them like they are little humans. Why do adults always speak baby language? Poor kids probably think the adults are real idiots. This is such an honest (yeah for why lie to them about santa) post I resteemed

Thanks for popping in Buckaroo! I am honored you felt the urge to share this message, its only by talking about thus stuff that people might realize. I suspect most people baby-talk because they've seen others do it. Since my parents never did it to me, I was that kid that was sure any baby-talking adult was an idiot.

Be Blessed!

Here's a funny story. My husband and I do not baby talk our 11 month old. My mother does. She uses ridiculous words in a high pitched voice. Last week she was carrying on to my son. He was watching her from my arms. And suddenly yelled "WA!" She jumped she got such a fright but he had a good laugh - so did I! I could just see him thinking: I'm a baby not an idiot, Grandma"

I sincerely appreciate everything about this.

I'm also of the ilk that might be described as a *'baby/ child whisperer'*. It's not a bad term, that. Like you, I've always believed that speaking to a child as though they are perfectly capable of understanding complex concepts is truly the only way to help them grow. If we listen – more often than not – it is the child who is teaching *us.*

**Thank you for being wonderful.**
