Isn't it amazing that all that energy from the sun gets captured by leaves and turned into a woody plant you can burn for heat? So in a way you're solar heating your house, just one step removed. (Then again, I guess every form of heating is ultimately solar heating.) It always amazes me how a tree can grow up from nothing, building woody proteins out of molecules in the air and the ground, and then leave behind more soil and stuff than was there before. I'm kind of scratching my head wondering how scientists weigh these trees to measure their increase in mass. Do they dig them up, put them on a scale, and then plant them again?

I expect that they do a mass calculation for a measured amount of an aspen (52 inches maybe?) then given an estimated size of a tree they project the tree's mass. I hope not too many trees were killed or badly maimed in the pursuit of science but I really wouldn't leave you with much hope on the replanting...

The more I think about it... Couldn't they plant trees in really big pots, measure the weight including the soil, and see how much it increases each year? At least up to a certain size. Of course, controlling for the amount of weight in the soil could be a challenge.

They know how dense each type of wood is. It is easy to then calculate how heavy a tree is just by measuring it.
