Without getting into the technicalities of the Steemit platform, it clearly states in the whitepaper that SP gives that user influence over the platform. Be it viewed as having a "positive" or "negative" effect depending on whichever side of the fence that individual sits. There is no central controlling body governing Steemit that dictates whether those actions are appropriately right or wrong. It all boils down to a gigantic mish-mash of differing opinions. The buying of a product has nothing to do with the implications of the voting-based system we have in place here. Therefore, in this particular context, a person's free will to accept or reject another's decision based on their personal belief in what is right or wrong constitutes a "free market" in my book. I'm not saying the system is perfect, but it is what it is. In fact, it is so "free" that we even have the option to leave or stay on the platform if we so choose to. So while we may agree or disagree with the order of power and authority when it comes to operations concerning Steemit, everything is taking place within a pre-defined set of rules and constructs that preside over Steemit. Just my opinion.

My view on this is: A mall full of stores, all selling different items. One guy doesn't like the bookstore because he just doesn't read fiction so his action is to close it down so no one can buy from it and he wanders away happy. Rather than taking a look, saying, "Nah, not for me," and jogging on, leaving everyone else to browse. If you don't like something posted here, mute the poster and jog on.

It get your frustration, @michelle.gent. I truly do. But I still believe it was nothing to do with your actual content, from what I'm aware of. Flagging could happen to any one of us and that I believe is the cold, hard truth of the matter. I say this with all due respect, of course.

I'm not frustrated. I *was* when I first saw it, but I've had more information come in and I'm starting to see a few dots that connect. There's no point being frustrated with things there's no chance of changing :)

...I agree with pretty much everything you say... >Therefore, in this particular context, a person's free will to accept or reject another's decision based on their personal belief in what is right or wrong constitutes a "free market" in my book. You see the subtle ( but massive) difference ? A free market does _not punish_, (use of force) it _just promotes_ Any 'punishment' is incidental in a free market (not buying or using services, for example), it is _not_ an intended action.. (like down voting) Like I say, a subtle difference, but very different. Like we say, it is what it is. Steem on!

Apples and oranges, my friend. The traditional laws you refer to are contextually incompatible where our blockchain is concerned. "Downvoting" *is* considered to have intentional consequences. User freedoms and privileges to give *and* also take away. It's an integral ingredient to the in-built "free market" mechanics of Steemit. Therefore drawing external comparisons are few and far between. Though at the same time, I do appreciate your point of view as it's interesting to get others take on this divisive issue.

I disagree, mate. The principles still hold. >"Downvoting" is considered to have intentional consequences. Agreed, but it's a negative one. The consequences of down voting are _taking_ from someone without permission. That is theft. That principle, as i see it, cannot be twisted by context. _Freedom to takeaway from others has many names_, but non of them are in pro free market writings. They are seen as an acceptable forms of behavior, of a control mechanism, in hierarchical structures - like governments. Put another way, if there was no down voting, it would not longer be a divisive issue. You can only vote FOR, not against. That seems like a positive start, just on it's own. The crap content would disappear with free market forces this way. (bots are a different issue) Thanks for the reply, its nice to be appreciated. The whale super voting/curation would still remain, of course, but not down voting would eliminate one part of a messy situation. For me, the simplicity of the free market, is it's strength - it's only _when_ we try to tamper with it, when think _we_ are cleverer than 'it', the problems start. Revising, and re- revising to stop the problems tampering caused in the first place, only compounds the issues - then we end up with socialism, eventually... I don't think my input will change much anyway, and we will still have to live with others' decisions... I am a mere sub minnow - an amoeba - in the scheme of things..
