Mayhem at our annual office apartment meeting...

So the annual meeting of owners and tenants in my office apartment building took place last week. Most of the owners and many of the tenants that rent apartments came. The common thing in these meetings is tenants complaining about the poor maintenance of the building, the high shared utility bills and the central heating schedule. The owners on the other hand prefer to talk about overdue rents, small damages that tenants might have done and unpaid utility bills.

This year we found out that owners have taken the initiative to issue formal “payment orders” to tenants that have overdue bills. When the bill is 500€ or more, they sent a lawyer to file an official payment order on court, to force the “dead beat” to pay up fast the amount overdue and the legal fees. If the tenants don’t comply within a month, they gain the right to issue a foreclosure request on court in order to confiscate whatever they can, from couches and tv sets to the entire apartment! 

Fun fact: Two of the owners that “forced” this decision are lawyers and the “legal fees” for the payment order go to the one and for the foreclosure procedure to the other.

Naturally, when everyone else heard that, all hell broke loose… Suddenly, comments about “sleeping habits”  and “family loyalty-infidelity” were bursting. Tenants accusing other tenants and owners for everything. For extreme noise to high maintenance costs and from parking spots to tax evasion… It was funny and sad at the same time. Finally, when things calmed down a bit, we came to an agreement not to immediately take legal actions against each other but to give a verbal notice and arrange a schedule of payments regarding each case.

It never ceases to amaze me how people use things such as cars, houses and even money that doesn't belong to them and then get angry when they're asked to pay. LOL
