When I was younger, I really wanted to write children's books. You don't need a super dark, twisted and tormented creature for those! ;-) I wrote one for my oldest nephew and even illustrated it. Then I tried to write one for my younger nephew and flopped. I haven't tried since! I don't know if I'm a writer...more of a "muser". I know that's not a word but I'm making it one right now! I am in the same camp as you as far as observing people and reading about life and philosophy. That's where I am at right now with things.

"Muser." I like that... that's a nice term, and I guess I could easily apply that to myself, as well. Well done for writing a book for your nephew, though... at least you can look back and say "I did it!" I like where I am now, though... quite content to observe and muse-- no longer feel the compulsion to write that novel.
