Genius and madness really go hand in hand, and perhaps the genes that set up art for some reason also have to do with some mental disorders.

But even in epidemiological studies, a correlation has often been observed: among the family members of people suffering from mental disorders, such as [bipolar disorder](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/bipolar-disorder/index.shtml) or [schizophrenia](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/schizophrenia/index.shtml), there are more artists, whether musicians or painters, than in the normal population. Creativity can be seen in different ways. It is commonly believed that the creative person applies an original approach to solving problems, and has a different style of thinking from that of others. People with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder also often have abnormalities in cognitive processes.
Is there a common genetic root in these cognitive processes?
The group of Kari Stefansson, in the [study](https://www.nature.com/articles/nn.4040) published in Nature Neuroscience, reports that among those who carry the genetic variants most commonly associated with an increased risk of mental disorders there is a greater probability of being an artist. In other words, the researchers observed that those with the genes considered most at risk for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are more likely to belong to one of Iceland's national associations that bring together actors, dancers, musicians, visual artists and writers.

The proof was made with data on two other populations, Swedish and Dutch. Again, among the bearers of the incriminated genes, those dedicated to creative professions were more represented.

Would creativity, given at least in part by common genetic variants, have the price to pay for an increased risk of disturbances with the same genes at the roots? “There is no genius without a vein of madness” , as [already Aristotle, Seneca, Shakespeare have emphasized](http://www.thequotelab.com/blog/df76p6zf1189mxpg5uypi0s8dlbvkt). Who knows if this genetic trace is really the right one, and what other factors can lead to a healthy creativity or a sick genius.
