4 Tips for Working Less and Living More! Frugal Living

I gave up my career 5 years ago because I wasn’t happy and I felt like I was missing out on valuable family time at home. Here are some of the ways that I have been able to cut back on money spent since being at home:

1 Food: Grow your own and cook from scratch – Save £300/month

Some of the things that bothered me were that I wasn’t able to cook for my son and husband every day. We got takeout regularly or precooked meals from the supermarket to save on prep time. These things are quite costly when you add them up over the month. I have started to grow things in the garden since being at home. This saves on buying ingredients and they also taste better when home-grown! I also now plan our meals at the beginning of the week and only buy the things I need rather than just filling the trolley up as you walk around the shop! Another little trick I have is that our local coop store reduces fresh produce by up to 80% after 9pm, so I wait until then and go shopping and check out with they have in store on offer for little treats!

2 Clothes: Unplug the tumble dryer and breathe the fresh air! – Save £200 per month

As crazy as it sounds, I missed hanging the washing outside on the line to dry. I love taking the time to hang clothes out, it reminds me of the beautiful gifts that nature gives us for free. It is also a task that you have to take time over, you can’t rush it or your clothes just won’t dry properly.

I also only buy clothes for practical purposes since quitting my job. I no longer need to buy expensive shoes and suits to impress customers or to fit in with the others in the office. My dogs and family love me in my comfy jeans and jumpers luckily! You could even scour the charity shops for bargains!

3 Gifts: Make your own items – Save £50 per month

I enjoy creating things, for example I love to crochet. At Christmas this year, all of my family and friends will be receiving scarves, hats and blankets rather than shop bought ‘stuff’. I have found in the past that people appreciate them much more if you have taken the time to make it yourself, plus they are the much cheaper option of course!

If you make extra, you can always sell the things you make as a side income. Nothing sells better at this time of year than hand-made gifts. You could also trade with other crafty friends to add a little variety to your gifts.

Terrific post and congratulations on the move out of the work environment to one of freedom.  Some of the suggestions you make are wonderful.  It is something that I believe more people will do over the next decade as people are phased out of the work force.

Personally, I am trying to align myself so I can make a similar move.

You've done well by the sounds of it. I am trying to grow my own but the the continuous rain this summer I produced nothing really. I buy all organic produce and cook from scratch so good in that sense. I use a clothes horse and try and be as energy sufficient as possible. Also got into investing in various cryptos so a space to watch :)

Excellent advice and some points that are often overlooked when moms feel like they need to work to make the family able to monetarily survive. Especially the part where it's important to learn to appreciate time instead of money. Thanks for the great post!

Thank you for your reply :)  I often find when I speak to strangers, they ask me what I "do".  When I tell them I look after my home and family, they look at me as though I am from another planet lol But when I look back on my old life where I was working everyday and making money for a corporation, but only just seeing my son for an hour per day before he went to bed, I realise that it is not me that is wrong, it is what we have come to accept as normality.  Don't feel guilty for appreciating time at home raising your children or caring for family members.  At the end of the day, relationships and time are more important than anything else in this world :)
