**Posting Rewards**

Not a day goes by where steemians have not engaged in discussion, in one form or other, about the steem reward pool and how it is allocated. The successful distribution of steem is one of the most important goals for ensuring the long term viability of steem as a network, an economy, a community, a currency and a store of economic potential.

On the face of it, posting rewards are for posts. The reward is supposed to reflect the value of the content of the post and the engagement it generates in the comments. Rewards are weighted by stake (SP), activity (voting power), strength (SP toggle) and total votes cast in an attempt to enable stake or volume to influence the quality of posts. This is all very new and very complicated so we are all trying to get to grips with the mechanisms involved and to make the system as fair as possible.

But....

There are other use cases for the posting rewards from the reward pool. These are operating models that offer accounts something in return for their votes and stake weighted reward. A successful operating model will hope to secure a daily feed from the reward pool from loyal accounts that wish to use their service. After operating costs and any other overhead is accounted for, the owners of the model will take a fee or percentage. If their business model is a success, they will secure a reward pool feed that far exceeds the costs of the service and will begin to accumulate steem, steempower or steem dollars.

There are many such services popping up all over steemit, some have proven to be very successful already. I want to make it very clear that if the rules of the service are clear and followed, there is nothing wrong (in my opinion) with people building creative businesses or services on the steemchain and leveraging the steem community and reward pool. However I wanted to make this post to encourage further discussion about and bring attention to the possible pitfalls.

* The steemit interface is not very good at supporting complex arrangements between business models of certain kinds and their customers or supporters. It makes it difficult to fine-tune the model and ensure transparency, fairness and efficiency.
* Large SP holders have a responsibility to create a market pressure with their power to allocate steem via the reward pool is only reaching the services that are the most fair, efficient, valuable and supportive of the steem economy.
* Services that attract a lot of Steemians or whale support will very quickly aggregate steem and SP. Once they have it, what will they do with it? Anyone can accumulate influence by buying steem but that is different from Steemains allocating the precious and finite reward pool. It is important to ensure there is a fair exchange of value when all things are considered.
* The reward pool is there for us to give steem to those who's content we value. However many services will be built around enabling you to receive back a proportion of your vote reward. This is a highly centralising force, for example...

I make an arrangement with certain whales to make 20 posts a day of dubious quality or requiring minimal effort. The whales have agreed to upvote all of my posts. I will then give back 90% of their reward value, taking 10% per post myself. Very quickly we would all become blue whales.....no doubt syphoning off as much steem as we could and selling it into the market for as long as possible before outside investors worked it out and steem was destroyed.

That is a worst case scenario I grant you and perhaps it would not come to that because of the transparency of the steemchain and the quality of steemians in general. The only thing preventing a tendency to slip towards abuse and to climb towards efficiency and value is our combined due diligence as a community.

Turning voting power and reward pool allocation into services and investment opportunities I think is a **VERY GOOD THING**!! There are so many ways that we can ensure that the entrepreneurs within the steem community tend towards initiatives and projects that have long term value for the steem economy, steem community and steem. Make no mistake, we all benefit from the success of the steem economy.

One example for how a service might ensure a reasonable relationship between profit and value given back is to simply limit their take. Once everything is taken care of.....overheads, take, growth (for certain businesses,) burn the remaining steem periodically. That way every steemian will benefit from the service whilst the business is fairly compensated. I think witnesses have periodically taken this approach in their campaigns for approval.

We won't get everything right from the outset but I think our approach to innovative uses for the reward pool could make or break steem.

************************************************************************************
Happy Steeming

@benjojo ·
Hi mrwang, I've read your LiLWANGS and WANGCHANGE posts and the truth is, i'm not entirely sure if this is an example of what i'm talking about in this post or not :) I'm leaning towards not at this point. You seem to be attempting to create a market backed by your creativity and future steem related rewards. I did not see you once ask for votes or make receiving a vote part of the conditions of involvement in your reward tokens....which makes a big difference I think. You have requested that those interested engage with you, your content and each other and help to spread the word and your output, both internally and externally.

The one area I would be cautious about is the relative value of your tokens and the rewards for your content you are receiving....but investments are risky and it is for participants to do their own due diligence and assess the value in risks to their time and money. I think I like what you are trying to do and i wish you all the success. If people value your content then they should vote for you and you can build the revenue you need to grow your product and brand. I am not an expert and could be missing something but that's my feedback based on what I have read today. Best of luck.

Well written Benjojo I appreiate your continued investment of time and effort into this platform. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on how a game that integrates some steem data might go about monetising. I have played with some ideas. But lets say if you dont mind, what method you would use if you where monetising such as thing, how would you do it?

@benjojo ·
What would be incredible is if your game was so good that people from outside of the steem economy were willing to pay btc or whatever to play....you would be bringing value to steem. Perhaps even better would be if those same people were willing to exchange their btc for steem in order to play.

If all internal,just steemians playing, then you could request steem or SD to play.....you don't necessarily need votes from the reward pool. If the game involved making posts and to play people made a transfer to your account, you could promise to burn all the vote rewards or something along those lines....

It's difficult to know what to suggest as i have no idea what kind of game you are talking about and how it would work :) Anyway, I hope that helps you.

@benjojo ·
My concern is purely for a fair exchange of value when considering the whole system. Rewards for quality posts is subjective and that is challenging enough to get right as we have seen. The scope for abuse increases when offering something beyond the post itself like a promise to invest for returns or a gambling service or something else gives the SP account holder the opportunity to get the post reward back instead of distributing it.....for a fee. I guess 'buying' the reward pool is part of the issue in a nutshell.

I do not like this at all. Enough people seem to think Steemit is a scam when you tell them about it. This pretty much makes it one. The reward pool is called a reward pool for a reason. It's supposed to be used to reward creators and curators. This sounds to me like people developing methods to siphon money directly from the reward pool so as not have to have to do it so conspicuously through abusive voting.

I bookmarked this piece . Really interesting thoughts but some points I didn't really understand because it wouldn't be good at all if people could just buy into the reward pool. That's totally unfair. I need to read this again.

Try not to get too hung up on the 'buying' part. Think of it as an exchange of value...people are not going to give away votes/reward without something in return. All I'm saying is that we need to ensure the terms of the exchange are fair and also, in my opinion, consider the overall health and future of the Steem economy.

In order for Steem to be truely successful, it must interface with the real world which means people must be able to offer real world services for Steem. That can happen outside of the reward pool but it will also happen within the reward pool.

Take a lottery service. Lottery posts are made encouraging people to gamble their reward in the hope of making a return. They aren't voting, giving/distributing their Steem reward for the quality of the post exactly, they are are hoping to get Steem back instead. For this service, the lottery designer takes a fee/percentage/rake. If the lottery is successful and many people use it, they will quickly accumulate Steem. There's nothing wrong with that if that is what people want but I think it's important to think these things through. The lottery service that succeeds should be the one that works well, takes the lowest rake possible, promises to burn Steem in excess of reasonable profit targets and perhaps even agrees to keep a percentage as Steem power for five years....etc etc.

There are a lot of these initiatives starting up and I genuinely think it's a good thing. Steem and the interfaces are tools, it's how we choose to use them that matters. But we need to discuss this now because there is great potential for abuse, centralisation of Steem power and damage to the Steem economy.

At its worst, if whales simply uvotedveach others shit posts because of an agreement to share the reward pool between themselves, Steem would die. It's clear some unscrupulous whales have attempted these kinds of unwholsome strategies but thankfully we're neutered.

The abit and smooth experiment shows us that Steemit works better when more people feel they have influence. We need to make it so that anyone can fairly easily gain enough Steem to wield influence. Flattening the reward curve will hopefully help, delegated voting, sharing voting power. All these affect how the reward pool is utilised and Steem distributed. The flow of Steem is becoming more complex and that's great but we need to make sure that the reason the Steem flows where it does meets our certain standards and does not represent abuse.

Sorry to go on so long! I hope this better elucidates my point.

Hello my Friend ... I agree with you
---
 Turning voting power and reward pool allocation into services and investment opportunities I think is a VERY GOOD THING!! There are so many ways that we can ensure that the entrepreneurs within the steem community tend towards initiatives and projects that have long term value for the steem economy, steem community and steem. Make no mistake, we all benefit from the success of the steem economy.

You kickstart a very good discussion here. I have not the answers how to deal with the reward pool, to be honest, but I do think we need to create communities and sub-communities by onboarding businesses who can also bring there followers on other media channels to Steemit. Think of newspapers, digital newsfeeds, and ezines. What you see today at Steemit is we kind-a copy a news article, and even some of us just put in a link to a external news item. We even have the "newslink" tag. Why not having the original creators of these news articles a channel in Steemit? Maybe they even have to pay an upfront fee for them to get their feed into Steemit? Maybe even have to pay more when they get a more prominent spot within Steemit? Steemit requires a complete re-design of the UI, with more features for the users to configure its own post feed. When bringing on businesses it becomes even more crucial the user is able to configure its own feeds and channels, because that will be the only way to still give a good user experience for the user, whilst we as the Steemit community can benefit in various ways from onboarding businesses (direct fees paid by the businesses, and the indirect increase of Steem value). I actually think, that whenever Steemit Inc and/or Busy.org will not deliver something for businesses, other will and yet another Steemit UI is created. When Steemit Inc or even the community will not help/support such 3rd UI directly, it'll be created anyway, in ways that group/company will earn money with it, but maybe not directly benefiting the community (eg earning money through fiat instead of Steem). When we somehow will force this not to happen, I mean onboarding businesses, then I foresee a clone of Steemit created where such model will be implemented.
