Bozzlife: Disaster Recovery Desk Rebuild

----------

When @mrsbozz and I moved into our house about five years ago, I wanted to do something special for her. I decided to build her a desk in the basement where she could keep all of her scrapbooking stuff.

I purchased a hollow core door from the local home improvement store and some cube style shelves. I attached the cubes together so there would be storage in the front cube and on the right side of the back cube.

It worked out well for many years until our basement flooded due to a sump pump failure and the cheap cubes that were made from particle board absorbed the water, got swollen, and broke apart.

![image019.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmZzfKhqmGUbdUbD1uaZsrhcNu8FBQcm1ejz1MF3bJXsKo)

----------

The recovery process in our basement has been completed for about a month or two now, so Christmas break was the perfect time for me to get to work putting things back together.

In addition to all of our pictures, [coat racks](https://steemit.com/busy/@bozz/bozzlife-another-diy-coat-rack), and wall hangings needing to be remounted, I also needed to build a new desk.

Thankfully, the top of the desk was still in good condition, so I only needed to replace the pieces that held it up. I could have just went out and bought new cube shelves, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, my wife has declared an edict after the flood that nothing shall be in the basement unless it is in a waterproof tub or sitting three inches off the floor.

On top of that, my wife doesn't do as much scrapbooking as she used to (especially since most of her supplies were ruined in the flood), so that gave me the flexibility to design something new for the desk.

I started out using my trusty miter saw and cutting the boards as you see above.

![image020.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmNhV9NQpbpEDgxDkFvMgaX4n8v3HLHwuH5HhWnqRG2vcT)

----------

The next part was a slow process, but I began to build the frame for the desktop. Even though I cut all the boards on the miter saw, some of the measurements still were not quite right so I had to double check each piece individually.

![image021.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmUKA81bb5GaW71ubqs4wMyeHR6GLNSftXkbZ5UjcjUdVg)

![image022.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/Qmeiaj4wJyFAi4t3SqYc9UJtz2yt4pytUnJBbcMKHpaJUa)

![image023.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmPn44fgDdx6TwJxMCvpKqy4DHKE9gqWALd8KHnPn8wzK5)

----------

Eventually, I got to the point where all of my support pieces were created. I decided to throw everything together to see how I did at keeping it level and straight.

![00000IMG_00000_BURST20191223111328490_COVER.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmZrbDoqqWzBP4WvpPMVMKmjQq58vPBnFLubH29LeaFdzs)

----------

Looking pretty decent so far!

Next, I knew that I wanted to have some form of shelf under each end, so I found some spare wood I had laying around to connect the two supports on each end.

![00000IMG_00000_BURST20191223111601669_COVER.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmSyUThZiwsvspkurKK7aPKf25PqRArGBPdhd1jepDU3kH)

----------

Before I cut the spare wood, I noticed where it came from and I knew I had to take a picture for @tattoodjay.

![00000IMG_00000_BURST20191223112853903_COVER.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmfQZShKMJ32mFzzRxxj2wnruBroovW8nu1HiEWQgSjwsk)

![00000IMG_00000_BURST20191223112858884_COVER.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/Qmag5mwqzL78RNTrsP7y4TkVVPKfyzVHHa4vkNzMy329bZ)

![image024.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmVv397Nk7X3XMiPjQHhhUfEeRNMnFDm1f4hj2WMWuxDkP)

----------

With the cross supports in place, things were really starting to come together!

The next step was something that I was really dreading because I don't have the proper tools. If I had a table saw I could have easily cut the plywood for the shelves, but because I don't, I had to pull out my circular saw and straight edge.

![image025.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmbpBMRDhQgLsQWvDZFY2E9iTzz2Lxaxthisw4iUEVLzgF)

![image026.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmXUnqn1qx4EPSAaE9Ec9xoguGXtTJ2ehndKLXJ1qMfeEy)

----------

It actually worked out much better than I had anticipated and by the time I was finished, I had two pieces of plywood that were the perfect size and they fit in the spots I needed them to like a glove.

![image027.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmU3egCEt48jBAZaAix5ah3GtjdjNYThxKuAiGXwQHw9pa)

----------

At this point there were only three things left to do. I needed to sand down the wood so that it was smooth and nice looking. Then I needed to paint the stands to match the top of the desk which had already been painted white from the first desk I made.

![image028.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmPeXdkPY8MQCDE3cN5YZbbfYN82HTbyXGNFmyryjwCfpC)

-----------

The final step was to carry it all down into the basement and assemble it. I have said before that the things I build tend to lean more towards functional and less towards aesthetically appealing. That is definitely the case with this desk, but I am still really happy with the way it turned out.

![IMG_20191230_154343.jpg](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmaFiRnpMuymHjsc8VhFvdNXxW7iFuqhFAToiyg7fd1kgt)

----------

I think it turned out pretty nice and it definitely gets the job done. Anything that we store on the shelves should be safely out of reach should another flood happen and desktop is spacious and secure. If I were to do anything differently, I would maybe have made it just a little shorter. Other than that, I am pretty happy with the outcome.

*all pictures were taken by me*

On a very small scale...I've been onto something like this. Small scale and experience ;) Glue only. We call it C 200. And a pocket knife saw.

Nice piece of work. You certainly know how to handle those tools. Interesting that the wood comes from so far away. You would think that would make it expensive.

$0.03
Thanks, I appreciate it. Those pieces were scrap from another project that I did. It was a nicer piece so the wood was a little more expensive. Those 2x4's were less than $3 a piece for eight foot long boards.

Well done there @bozz looks pretty good... seems your a dab hand at joinery/DIY. Hanging baskets and curtain rails are my limit ... any more and I have to get the 'professionals' in who generally want the shirt off my back if they bother turning up. 🙄

Thanks and yes I am mildly dangerous with power tools. I grew up helping my dad in the garage and I used to work with my friend who is a builder. I have picked up some skills along the way. Him and I used to be able to put together a shed kit in less than 8 hours, shingles and all.

Hey! You know I am all about the function! And even so, this looks decent and it serves a great purpose.

Once you have been flooded, you no longer want to put big $$ down there. Nice job, and thanks again for the step by step! It really helps me put it all together!

Have a great night!

No problem! Thanks for the great comment. We need to replace the carpet eventually, but I think realistically a generator should be our first purchase!
