NASA rescheduled mission Psyche to huge metal asteroid: arrival in 2026 instead of 2030

Good news! Psyche, NASA's mission to a metal asteroid, has been moved up one year with launch in the summer of 2022, and with a planned arrival at the main belt asteroid in 2026 -- four years earlier than the original timeline.

Psyche is a unique asteroid: it is rough egg, sized 240 x 185 x145 kilometers, composed mainly from iron and nickel with small additions of heavy metals, of which platinoids are of special interest for future asteroid mining. Located in the Main Asteroid Belt, between Mars and Jupiter, it comprises over 1% of whole Belt's mass. Initially, launch was planned on 2023 and arrival at Psyche in 2030 with two gravitational manoeuvers at Earth and Mars.

Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division:

We challenged the mission design team to explore if an earlier launch date could provide a more efficient trajectory to the asteroid Psyche, and they came through in a big way. This will enable us to fulfill our science objectives sooner and at a reduced cost.

Team redesigned flight path of the spacecraft: The revised trajectory is more efficient, as it eliminates the need for an Earth gravity assist, which ultimately shortens the cruise time. In addition, the new trajectory stays farther from the sun, reducing the amount of heat protection needed for the spacecraft. The trajectory will still include a Mars gravity assist in 2023.

New trajectory required more thrust. Psyche is driven by Xenon ion thruster, well proven during Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres.

To boost thrusters, more energy is necessary: in order to support the new mission trajectory, SSL redesigned the solar array system from a four-panel array in a straight row on either side of the spacecraft to a more powerful five-panel x-shaped design, commonly used for missions requiring more capability.

The main scientifical objective of the mission are:

Determine whether Psyche is a core, or if it is unmelted material.

Determine the relative ages of regions of Psyche's surface.

Determine whether small metal bodies incorporate the same light elements as are expected in the Earth's high-pressure core.

Determine whether Psyche was formed under conditions more oxidizing or more reducing than Earth's core.

Characterize Psyche's topography.

The Psyche spacecraft is being built by Space Systems Loral and based on proved construction - Loral is manufacturer of military and civil Earth satellites. After arriving at Psyche, it will study metal world next 20 months.

Sadly, there is no lander: simple electromagnets could do the job, pushing probe to the metal surface.
