I've always had this deep appreciation for intellect and enjoy studying and learning about how people with high IQ's think, how they discovered their break through and made history simply by thinking. 

We've moved into a world where thinking has now become a performance mechanism that can really differentiate you from others. While back in the day having a high IQ and working the fields and doing what one needs to, to survive helped but didn't necessarily set you apart. Now in modern times it can vastly set you apart. 

All the highest paying jobs require high level mental capabilities especially in science and technology. If you have an idea that can generate huge amounts of wealth you can accumulate wealth you couldn't spend in one life time. People love to outsource their mental capacity to someone smarter.

I will say this before and 1000 times more, I believe that at any given time there are only between 10 000 - 100 000 people thinking for the rest of the world. We just follow what they give us blindly since we trust in genius. 

Why do you think businesses like Amazon, Google, Apple and Facebook have reached these next level valuations and influence in a short period of time. They thought of something and we all bought into it, never questioned a single thing, like wow this is so convenient and makes sense take my time and money and use it to make yourself a super power and wealthy as hell.

## Genius comes at a cost

It is often portrayed that genius is some sort of burden and that these people possess a mental imbalance. Part of their “genius” is not only in the fact that they may be quirky or eccentric, but also that mentally they are overdeveloped in certain parts of the brain which gives way to their genius.

That their cognitive and creative thinking has somehow exhausted the rest of the functions and left them underdeveloped in other parts which makes social functioning unsettling for them at best and completely debilitating at worst.

**This begs the question:**

> Is the mind really that simple? That we as people allocate our limited resources of the mind differently?

The other popular assumption for a geniuses quirky behaviour is that have realised truths the average person remains stuck in and has become disillusioned and isolated by the structure and expectations of the norm. 

It could be that they understand far more about the nature of this world and this life and therefore either hold little interest or little satisfaction in the act of socializing with those who think, act, and live on a lesser spectrum of awareness.

That to think on their level is to suffer as you view the worlds ignorance and quickly build up a disdain for it.


## Genius depicted in media

If you've ever seen a movie about a genius they are either annoying, misunderstood, seem a bit crazy or standoffish, very combative and often are loners. 

Just take the following movies for example, they are almost stereotypical of what society views a genius as. 

**Good Will Hunting**

**Rain Man**

**A beautiful mind**

**The imitation game**

**The theory of everything**

**Steve Jobs**

**The Social network**

Not that these movies aren't entertaining and informative. I'm merely observing the trend, its often times that their genius is also the biggest flaw. Driving home the narrative that intelligence isn't everything and its better to be a well rounded individual.

## Is this how they are or how we see them

What I would like to know is if you're a genius you're an anomaly right? An outlier of sorts so how can you have traits that are stereotypical even for your bracket of intelligence? Do all intelligent people simply act the same way? I some how doubt that.

What if we just fail to see the nuance of their behaviour and aim to categorize it as we do ourselves in order to make sense of it.

While our society likes to pretends to value intelligence, when they finally make their break through that is undeniable, its not often the case during the years prior. 

Those who are of the potential are often seen as outside of the ‘norm’ makes the average person uncomfortable. People have very fragile egos, so the only way they can mentally accept someone being better than them in any way is to associate it with a flaw, something that makes them also worse.

Now with every stereotype, there is some truth. There are many examples of people who are geniuses but socially inept, but this is far from all genius. I think we tend to focus on it because it is the extreme cases, as we do with most things.


## Have your say

Does a genius always have to be eccentric or socially awkward? Is it simply because they seem that way since they don't see the need to bullshit or see the flaws in social interaction that they seem socially awkward? Do you know a genius? Are they like that? Are you a genius and are you like that? 

Is it a hollywood gimmick? Can you be a genius and be well rounded?
