Tree Tuesday - English Ivy Kills Trees
This is my contribution to @old-guy-photos #treetuesday photo theme.  On one of my frequent hiking trails, I have walked for years by a group of trees that are covered in English Ivy. I never thought much about it until this week when I decided to take some “looking up” photos of a group of these trees. They are especially noticeable in the winter landscape as they are the only greenery in that part of the park. As you can see in the photo below, the ivy has climbed far up into the treetops.

A little research online and I found out that English Ivy is killing these trees by damaging the bark as it climbs, making the trees much more susceptible to disease and pests. 

That explains why there there are so few branches on the trees.

There are quite a few videos on line showing how to remove and kill the Ivy. One interesting method is to cut the vines off above ground, wrap duct tape around the top of the vine, leaving enough duct tape overhanging to create a small cup at the top. It recommended filling the cup with table salt, which would be absorbed into the cut off vine and poison the vine over time.

This just proves my long-standing theory that if something can’t be fixed with duct tape, it can’t be fixed.

Yes I had some "YouTube" friends from England that like to hike. They would bring along a straight saw along and cut the ivy. I have some aggressive ivy like vine in my backyard that I fight with all summer!

I’m surprised our State Park rangers haven’t done anything about the vines. They seem to be spreading to more trees. Good luck with yours!

Actually, I want to thank you for writing this. When I first moved to the Washington DC area, I had four trees in my yard that had English ivy on them and they were gorgeous, with big green leaves all the way up to the top and along all the branches. It wasn't until I looked it up just as you did then I saw it was killing my trees. These trees were crape myrtles and I didn't even know it because they didn't even flower anymore.

I actually cut the trees all the way down to the ground because they were crepe myrtle and would come back. Those Vines had leaves that were bigger than my head. I could not believe it and I could not believe how invasive it was. If you have English ivy, tame it or cut it. It reminds me of kudzu in some ways. Who knew that Ivy could be so invasive?

Thanks again! I sure wish you had printed this a few years earlier. LOL

It is pretty, but invasive as hell. Too bad about the crepe myrtles. I love the texture of the bark as crepe myrtles age. Sorry Steemit wasn’t around earlier! I do think kudzu is beautiful as well in a redneck sort of way. 😁
