The Death of Blab is an opportunity for Steem

Steem lacks live content

Notice I used "Steem" instead of Steemit. Steemit consists of functioning more like Reddit. Blab on the other hand is a live streaming platform which may be the component that Steem currently lacks. Steem could benefit from live content and Blab had a successful formula which can now be studied.

While Steem is great currently for written content or pre-recorded content it does not yet have an interface or mechanism to allow for rewarding live content such as what was generated by Blab. Wouldn't it be nice if there could be something like Blab which rewarded users in Steem Dollars?

Now imagine if Steem developers took what was learned from Blab, considering that Blab put that information out, and simply made Streem live chat where people can vote up different chatrooms as if they were threads on Reddit?

If someone launches a show or a chatroom which is successful then it could get upvoted, and maybe from this upvoting there could be a reward for the content the room generates. Of course this will all be subjective, as would the content in the text section of the room, but the fact that on Blab the content could be instantly recorded onto Youtube, it allowed for content to become popular when replayed. In essence, a Steem live chat would be like a Vlog on Steemit today, but would reward all participants in the live chat according to a set of rules.

Many former Blab users are here on Steemit

I know because I invited some of them in the very beginning phase of Steemit (prior to July 4th). There are now a lot of former Blab users who have no where to go, or who are looking for a new place to produce their content. Steem could offer a place for former Blab users to go and earn from their content.

The issues? Of course we have to consider where the content will be stored or how to handle the infrastructure for handling live streams. Considering that SAFE Network is in alpha testing it may be possible eventually to use it as a backend storage foundation along side Youtube. Would any enterprising developer like to take on the task of creating a live Stream site for Steem which functions like Blab, and be possibly rewarded with upvotes?

Upvoted! I guess the core team have their hands full with STEEM and Steemit however there many windows of opportunities for developers to leverage STEEM and monetise different forms of content. Rewards for streaming live content seems a prime candidate.

I've still got an account on Blab. For what it is, I actually love that platform because I've made very good friends and we're looking forward to one day meeting in person!  I've been absent from livestreaming by simple fact that I'm in the process of moving and still need to get internet to my house (UGH) but there's FB Live, Snapchat...and now, apparently Instagram.  But livestreaming here?  It's an interesting concept. I wonder how that would work on a blockchain?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what digital currency is and how it works.  In my experience, expansion, especially quick expansion of any business usually means a drop in value until they get back on their feet and figure out the logistics of new volume and overhead.  Many businesses end up sinking the entire ship, whiles others manage to recover and thrive.  Does steemit have a strong enough infrastructure to rebound from growth potential like that?  
I'm all for beta products because you just never know if it's going to take off and finally lose the beta tag - but until then, I'm just going to keep contributing to the platform and see who else I can bring in. Too many of us writers have been burnt by sites that *supposedly* pay for community interaction and content - then close shop. I spend approximately 3-4 hours a day on Steemit since I've joined.  I don't generate good money but I keep trying.  Even with a livestreaming option, I don't know how much time I can keep investing.   (sorry for the ramble.  I'm just putting down random thoughts before I have a brain fart)

My guess is that this might require another blockchain with different reward system. I'm not very familiar with live-streaming, but if I have understood correctly, life of the content is very short. It might need something like 2 hour time window for the first reward payment to get the dynamics right with live content. After the stream has ended, very few are interested in it anymore.

Not only can you use the same blockchain but you can use the accounts from this blockchain. Steem is the underlying technology based on Graphene which has more than enough scalability to support multiple front ends.

The Streemit or Streem live chat would to the blockchain use the same reward mechanisms as Steemit but the front end and UX would be different, and maybe additional features could be built exclusively for live functionality. But from what I know so far, there will be a sort of text based Steem chat being developed so all they would need to do is add web rtc or something similar.

You might need some additional features of course but in general if a chatroom is the equivalent of a blogpost on Steemit, and you break the text functions into comments, it could work. The issue would be what if the live Streemit becomes more popular? But I don't see why features couldn't be built into Steem itself to support live interfaces and live streams, so it's just a matter of paying the developers which itself is just a matter of upvoting the attempts.

You make a good point with regard to the time window. Again, there probably will have to be some subtle modifications to Steem to allow for live features but once that is done then I don't see a problem. I think it would be rather trivial really compared to the other stuff they are working on or have done.

With live content the payout schedule could be exactly the same. People make a live show, as people join the chat they watch the broadcast or participate in the chat. Anyone who joins the chat automatically upvotes the room they join unless they specifically downvote. This would monetize any chatroom which gets a lot of people in them. The live stream can be recorded or off the record, and if recorded then people can replay it and vote it up or down for 24 hours. After that then 30 days just like Steemit.

And then people can vote for members in the chat by voting up text comments or voting up individual broadcasters. Thoughts?

I think there might be a need to several sidechains in the future. Right now we have just one reward payout system, but to fully capture all potential, we might need many of them. In my post [What is the ten year vision for Steem blockchain?](https://steemit.com/steem/@samupaha/what-is-the-ten-year-vision-for-steem-blockchain) I was thinking about three chains:

- **Fresh content.** Twitter-like short messages, memes, breaking news. If content is older than 24 hours, very few are interested in it anymore.
- **Blog-like content.** Essays, opinions, commentary, etc. Stays relevant from a few days to a few months.
- **Book-like content.** Long texts. Stays relevant for years.

Live streaming goes to the first category.

I agree with you about the value of live content. It's like the fresh fruit compared to the processed and packaged fruit roll. As you say, Steemit is a superb platform for pre-packaged content, and there must be a way to bring in more of the freshness we might find on Blab.

I think applications like this will take off as soon as the core dev team clarify what opportunities there are for revenue generation for the application itself. Without that clarification nobody serious will invest time into building other applications on top of Steem because the competition is too steep for another Freemium company.
