Fuck Cancer
<a href = "https://file.army/i/GLW86k"><img src = "https://404store.com/2017/11/10/pinkribbon.png"></a>

I haven't been posting lately. A recent tragedy has changed my life forever. My wife of 16 years and mother of our four children passed away at only 41 years old.

A little over a year ago, in August 2016, she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. At the time it was diagnosed, it appeared to have also spread to a couple of lymph nodes. A PET scan did not show that the disease had spread anywhere else and the prognosis was reasonably good. We immediately set out on a course of treatment that included chemotherapy followed by surgery (a lumpectomy) and radiation treatment. Diet and other alternative treatments were also used that would not interfere with chemotherapy. By the end of May, treatment was complete and a biopsy of the tissue removed along with a few lymph nodes that were removed showed no sign of living disease. Until the end of August we thought we might have it beat.

In August, my wife started having headaches. The first couple of times we didn't think anything of it. They just seemed like normal headaches. But they became more frequent and severe. We went to the doctor and an MRI was scheduled. Before the MRI, the headaches became non-stop and were so severe she could hardly function. We went to the emergency room and she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This was at the end of August. The next day, the tumor was removed. According to the neurosurgeon, the surgery went as well as could be expected. In the case of brain surgery to remove a tumor, they can't really take a margin of tissue out to ensure that all the cancer is completely removed so radiation treatment would be needed. While the fact that the cancer had metastasized to the brain was alarming to say the least, we were hopeful that it had not spread anywhere else. Chemotherapy does not treat the brain because it does not cross the blood/brain barrier and we learned that a PET scan isn't as good as an MRI for detecting cancer in the brain so it seemed reasonable that maybe a small amount of cancer was already in the brain when treatment began or had spread there shortly after.

She was recovering well and was released after only a few days in the hospital. About two weeks later she had her first appointment with the radiation oncologist. He wanted to wait about 8 weeks from the surgery date in order for the brain to heal and swelling to decrease before beginning radiation treatment. Meanwhile, another PET scan was scheduled as soon as possible (about two weeks later) and another MRI was scheduled closer to when treatment would begin. Around this time, my wife started having pain in her upper abdomen. Her doctor though this might be due to the steroid that was prescribed to treat the swelling in the brain. However, as the PET scan appointment approached, the pain became worse and the PET scan confirmed our worst fears. Cancer had spread to her liver, bones (sacrum, at least one vertebrae and hip) as well as the chest cavity. Around this time, my wife also started having swelling in the abdomen and feet as well as severe back pain. Doing radiation and more chemotherapy at the same time wasn't an option so the doctors wanted to see the results of the brain MRI before deciding which to do first. The date for the MRI was moved up. Pain medication was prescribed.

A couple of days later when it was time for the MRI, despite the pain medication, the pain in her back was so severe that she could not lie flat to have the MRI done. More pain medication was prescribed and the MRI was rescheduled for the following week. Chemotherapy appointments were also scheduled with the assumption that this would happen first. By this point, despite all the pain medication, the only remotely comfortable position for her to be in was sitting in a chair leaning over the bed. The pain in her back seemed to get slightly better but then she started having numbness and weakness in her arms followed by confusion. We went to the emergency room.

In the emergency room, they could not get an IV in her arm. They couldn't find a vein with enough blood flow. The alternative is a line in the neck or thigh. Even with pain medication and sedation, pain prevented her from being still enough on her back to put a line safely in her neck. They finally managed to get one in her thigh. However, they had sedated her significantly enough that they wanted to put in a breathing tube. Little did I know that I would never talk to her again.

To make a long story short, the severe pain and neurological issues were caused primarily by liver failure due to the cancer. She died early in the morning on October 27th, a week after going to the emergency room that last time.

I don't know if there is anything we could or would have done differently. I mean, knowing that the treatments we attempted didn't work I would certainly try something different but I don't think there is anything different that would have helped. Triple negative breast cancer is particularly aggressive and seemed especially so in this case. I have done a lot of research and I know there are those that advise against chemotherapy in favor of alternative treatments but I don't think baking soda, diet, vitamins, cannabis oil, essiac tea or any one of a number of other alternative treatments would have worked better (and we tried some of those too). I don't doubt their anti-cancer properties, just their potency against something this aggressive. The conventional treatment we pursued actually has a good success rate for this particular cancer but obviously it isn't 100%. I can only advise that anyone with a similar diagnosis do their research and base their decisions on hard evidence vs. anecdotal and/or unverified stories. Early detection is the key and I think earlier detection is the only thing that would have helped in this case.

As far as the future is concerned, there are a number of ways you can help fight cancer. There are a number of good charities that could use your donation. If you are looking for good charities to give to, check out https://www.charitywatch.org/top-rated-charities and https://www.consumerreports.org/charities/best-charities-for-your-donations/ and look in the cancer subsections. Another way you can contribute is via volunteer computing. Rosetta@home (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah/rah_about.php), World Community Grid (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do) and gpugrid (https://www.gpugrid.net/) are all BOINC based projects that contribute to cancer research. You can even earn Gridcoin (http://www.gridcoin.us/) while helping. Folding@home (http://folding.stanford.edu/) is another option. Cancer sucks but you can help destroy it.

You did everything you could to try and save your wife, it's so hard to see someone you love in such terrible pain.
Running those BOINC projects is a tiny but positive action towards helping others avoid your situation.
It's shocking that this happened to your family while your wife was so young, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

> Early detection is the key and I think earlier detection is the only thing that would have helped in this case.

this is the only way to treat any disease, it's probably not a good time to talk about it, but I'm not a fan of cancer either, sadly I don't think modern medicine is any good, I've read a lot of anecdotal evidence if you can call it that, to me it does seem more logical to understand the issue rather than fight it, from my past explorations, all that I've gathered was be healthy and live healthy, so don't let those things happen, even with the alternative treatments there were some numbers, 80% if you catch it early, 20% if it's at a later stage, that's from a old documentary.

You've done everything with the knowledge you had and you were given, but I'm not convinced getting cut up and irradiated is any kind of treatment, personally I see cancer as the body malfunctioning, there is some argument that it's even evolutionary driven and most of the time it's a response to emotional or environmental trauma, so the body clogs up the organ until everything is fine for it to function properly, of course I'm just repeating what I've read and watched so take it with a grain of salt, still I'm more inclined to believe that good food, good relationships and a healthy mindset unwavering from hardships is the only way to live through such a hard and serious disease,

I wouldn't say fuck cancer, but I can't say it's a good story to be told, it's too wide spread in our age and probably the most death tolled disease.

I would link you to countless videos, even people that have lived through it, alternative treatments, ideas and concepts worth another eyeball, but for now I can just say I'm sorry for your loss and in a way sorry I'm bringing my own opinions somewhere they could bring pain

You could also link to countless videos of people having spontaneous remission. Without a controlled study and verification, it just doesn't mean that much. Many such videos are trying to sell a product. If you want to sell me a product, then do a controlled, scientifically sound study that shows your product works. You can bet that if something like baking soda (just as an example) had curative properties superior to what pharmaceutical companies were using then they would be optimizing it as a chemo drug. For all the complaints about "unnatural" chemotherapy, it is based mostly on natural things such as plant alkaloids and antibiotics. I think diet and nutrition can and does play a large role in prevention but once a particularly aggressive form of cancer is spreading throughout your body it's far too late for that. I also disagree somewhat with you about modern medicine. At least technology, treatment and medicine has improved greatly over the past 100 years. Even cancer treatment has improved greatly over the past few decades. That doesn't mean it is perfect (far from it) or that there aren't huge improvements to be made. Modern medicine is in many ways still very primitive. But it is obviously improving and I believe it will continue to do so. Now if we could just get politics out of medicine...

Risk factors also need to be better understood. In the case of my wife, she was at greater risk because of having four children and breastfeeding them all (breastfeeding one or two decreases the risk of cancer while breastfeeding more increases the risk, the same is true with having children in general). She was also at greater risk because of being of Filipino decent and living in North America (I can only assume this risk is related to genetics in combination with some other factor). While these are certainly lifestyle choices they aren't the sort you would typically link with cancer. The reasons that these are risk factors is not well understood.

Prevention is certainly important but all the preventative steps in the world won't eliminate the disease completely. Next to that, early detection is extremely important for any potentially valid treatment, whether traditional or alternative. I think that if my wife's cancer had been caught before spreading to lymph nodes then her story would be different.

Life and death decisions cannot be made lightly but can only be made with the best information available. No matter what decisions are made, if they don't work out as hoped, you will look back with some regret, guilt and a sense of what if...

So sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. Their are going to be tough times ahead. Remember your wife always and keep her legacy a live. Its tough to become a widowed father. I hope the best for you. Time will slowly ease your pain.

Been working on World Community grid with Mapping Cancers and Smash Childhood Cancer. I have been in a similar situation and would like everybody to spend some time working on the 2 projects listed above. We need to end this killer disease in our life time.

Great to hear. Never tried Rosetta@Home. Currently running Smash Cancer & Microbiome Immunity Project while switching one out every few days for Mapping Cancer Markers. Love to see this and Heart disease wipe of the face of the Plant.

@captain-hammer ·
Thank you for putting a human face on the work that we all try to be a part of (in our own small way.) My brother is heavy into Bitcoin, etc., and he's made himself very wealthy in the process. When I tell him about BOINC or Folding@Home, he laughs at me, and says things like "Why?! Those coins are worthless and serve no purpose. Don't waste your electricity on it, invest in BTC, or do mining of more valuable coins." But none of this is about getting rich. Personally, if I can just offset some of my electricity costs by selling some GRC, then it's a win-win. The point of doing this research is to put my own small skill-set (building fast mining rigs) to use for the betterment of people out there. And sure, one could argue "Oh these big companies all have deep pockets and don't need your help", or "Just wait for quantum computers to show up, and they'll solve these problems overnight", both of which may be true. But in the meantime, I (and we) can do our little part to help eradicate these horrible diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkison's, etc, that not only kill our loved ones, but makes them suffer horribly along the way. So yeah...fuck cancer!
