*I resti dell'acquedotto Romano di Acqui Terme é uno dei meglio conservati del Nord Italia, si trova appena fuori dal centro Città sulle sponde del fiume Bormida. Dagli studi finora condotti é emerso che risale al I secolo d.C. Ho avuto la fortuna di dormirci affianco in quanto lo potevo ammirare dal terrazzo dall'appartamento che ho affittato durante le mie vacanze.*

*Il percorso dell'acquedotto si sviluppa per una lunghezza complessiva di circa 12 km con un dislivello che parte da circa 185 metri fino ad arrivare ai 135 metri. L'impianto si snodava attraverso un percorso per la maggior parte sotterraneo della valle Erro ed è ancora oggi possibile seguirne l'intero tragitto. Assicurava rifornimento idrico ad alcuni comuni delle città di Cartosio e Milazzo.*

*Dell'originaria struttura sono ancora presenti in buono stato due tratti separati, disposti secondo un andamento nord-est/sud-ovest. I sette piloni, sui quali ancora sussistono quattro archi a tutto sesto, uno di questi é stato interamente ricostruito in muratura durante i restauri condotti alla fine del XIX secolo. L'altezza dei piloni supera di poco 17 metri, con una luce di poco inferiore ai 7 m.*

*Il secondo tratto si trova più a nord e ne rimangono solo spezzoni di otto piloni di sostegno e le arcate superiori sono andate completamente perdute, gli interventi di restauro si sono verificati di frequente dopo la sua costruzione, quello più importante fu realizzato alla fine del XIX secolo, come già accennato precedentemente, compromessa dai numerosi crolli e dalle ripetute esondazioni della fiume Bormida. In quell'occasione, vennero rifatte ampie porzioni di muratura dei piloni e delle arcate, utilizzando mattoni di colore chiaro con i quali richiamare la colorazione naturale della pietra calcarea, permettendo comunque di tenere distinte le parti integrate.*

*Lo sbocco del condotto sotterraneo ha un'inclinazione costante di circa 1.6 metri per chilometro, in modo da non rallentare il regolare scorrimento dell'acqua. Un problema considerevole era inoltre posto proprio dall'attraversamento del fiume, che costituiva il principale ostacolo naturale al raggiungimento del centro abitato.*

*La soluzione adottata dagli ingegneri romani ebbe il merito di risolvere i problemi legati alla difficoltà di costruzione dovuta alle barriere naturali circostanti in maniera semplice ed efficace. Gli studiosi pensano che originariamente la struttura in elevato fosse costituita da almeno una quarantina di piloni, appare inoltre del tutto probabile che essa dovesse proseguire fino all'interno della città, anche se mancano dati sicuri a questo riguardo.*
