A newly released study that was conducted by researchers from the Helsinki University Hospital, has discovered a connection between high exposure to commonly used oral antibiotics and an increased risk of Parkinson's disease. 

It has been [previously predicted that by 2030 the United States might see more than 1 million cases of Parkinson's disease](https://parkinsonsnewstoday.com/2018/07/12/1-2-million-cases-parkinsons-predicted-2030-united-states-study/). The prevalence of Parkinson's throughout the country has been estimated to be 572 per 100,000 but it has also been [suggested that the](https://www.mdedge.com/clinicalneurologynews/article/178689/movement-disorders/parkinsons-prevalence-varies-significantly) prevalence [could be vastly underestimated](https://www.neurologyadvisor.com/topics/movement-disorders/parkinson-disease-prevalence-severely-underestimated-parkinsons-foundation-prevalence-project/).  It's estimated that tens of thousands of individuals in the United States are being diagnosed with this illness every year. 


This is a condition that researchers insist for now cannot be cured but it can be helped with treatment. 

As well, the cause for Parkinson's is still unknown though researchers have pointed to several factors that might contribute to the development of this illness including [genetics and environmental triggers](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/parkinsons-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20376055), among other factors.

Antibiotic use is widely prevalent in the United States as it is in many other countries, and antibiotic resistance is said to be one of the biggest health concerns today that society faces. 

## Every year it is estimated that more than 2 million people get <b>an antibiotic-resistant infection</b> [with thousands ultimately losing their life](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/04/03/nightmare-bacteria-antibiotic-resistant-stalk-hospitals/482162002/). 

<center></center> It's been described as the <b>[post-antibiotic era](https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/11/14/20963824/drug-resistance-antibiotics-cdc-report)</b> and antibiotic resistance isn't the only fallout, as researchers have also discovered a connection between antibiotic use and various illness. 

Scientists have previously made the connection between antibiotic use and an increased risk for bowel cancer, [heart attacks](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190424202539.htm), strokes, and inflammatory [gut diseases](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170403123304.htm). 

## Overwhelmingly, many in the scientific [community are urging for further research on](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/10/191030101135.htm) antibiotic use because of the threat of resistance. 

<center></center>In the recent study that investigated the link between Parkinson's disease and antibiotic use, researchers discovered findings that support the notion that <b>the pathology of Parkinson's might originate in the gut</b>, ultimately related to changes in the microbiome, several years before any onset of the disease or symptoms surface. 

Parkinson's patients are known to have an *abnormal bacterial composition of the intestine*, but researchers are not sure what the cause of that might be, but more and more they are leaning toward the microbiome and the importance of the gut bacteria. They've concluded that the antibiotics could have influenced the gut [microbia and therefore be a predisposing factor for Parkinson's](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/11/191122113314.htm). 

The research that continues to be conducted on the microbiome is truly remarkable, the more that scientists investigate the more that they are finding the close connection between our gut and our overall health. 

Their investigations are ultimately going to drastically impact our understanding of disease, and influence treatment for millions hopefully for the better.
