I love the old arcade games.. The older the better,
Most of all pin ball.
You could still socialize while using them too .. No need to isolate yourself to play like todays games.
I miss them. :/

The arcade has a social element that can't be reproduced at home.  It's the same with deciding to watch movies at home or at the theatre.  People like to be out and about. :)

Part of my PhD involved investigating New Media Technologies and Virtual Galleries. One thing I slowly noticed was that arcades existed because people could not afford the massive consoles themselves. They had to go somewhere else to rent them. Once they became part of our homes, arcades died.

VR is no different. Games, even collaborative ones, are very much a selfish and rather private experience. I believe that the VR meme will die soon enough and only emerge with technologies that offer full immersion without the use of controls. 

The fact that the individual is kept suspended in two different realities, in time, makes the experience feel fake. With consoles the factor of sociality was apparent since there was little emersion. This the reason arcades were so popular.

Looks like tons of fun. Unfortunately there are no virtual reality arcade in Kuching where i live

I hope the arcade can keep the old ones and come with the new ones HAHAH. greedy af.

Nice post. Truely exceptional. I believe VR arcades will totally trump having to purchase the needed expensive hardware. Sadly, only core gamers and true VR nerds might be drawn to them. I shudder when I imagine how germy arcade VR sets could get

Proper VR arcades might really be the thing of the future. I would certainly pay a good dollar for something like this, but the games have to be top-notch or the novelty of it all will wear off really quickly.

I think virtual reality arcades will be the way VR will be mostly used by the general public for the foreseeable future.
The amount of money you need to invest to get a decent VR PC + the price of the VR gear itself and on top of that - the space requirement for the best VR games is just too much for any normal household to handle consistently.  Specially the space requirements.

Until we get decent haptic (or perhaps neural connections far into the future) this is how most people will experience VR. I'm guessing cinemas will be the ones who pick this up - giving up one or two of their spaces to convert them into VR arcades that will each consist of 4 - 6 smaller rooms - but those will still be enough to experience this. And 4 -6 people going in playing a game together in a shared world would be awesome.

Whenever I travel back to China, they still have so many arcade venues all over the places and the young crowds they used to attract are still prevalent there.

I personally loves the DDR machines (even tough I wasn't very good, lol).

nice post, thanks for sharing - brought out some good old memories! it was fun when we were kids, but nowadays it's hard enough to get people out of their homes.

This is a great topic! I even wanted to start my own arcade just a few years ago... actually still want to :D 

Not sure if there would be the required culture though, as you say, and in the end the games would likely be getting cheap enough that the only reason for anyone to come to an arcade would be for the social atmosphere. Woudl this be enough? Maybe. I guess it's possibly to to have a business catering to a specific subculture if you want it and others do to. But I think keeping afloat might be hard.

Nevertheless, there are actually some basement billiard halls in Sweden where they, sort of like in an internet cafe, rent out access to the computers so visitors can play LAN and online games. If this can work, then why not a modern virtual reality arcade?

In the late 70's and early 80's, the Arcade at the mall was the place to hang-out!  It may have contributed to the overall production of quarters in the US.  Will we ever see that level of consolidation?  I think not.  

Arcades in the day offered 2 things:
1. Ability to play games that individuals could not afford
2. Social interaction as part of a community who have a common interest (gaming, in this case)

Moore's Law and distributed computing have changed the equation.  Nowadays individuals can afford entertainment venues in their homes.  XBOX, Playstation, etc. have doomed most arcades.  Distributed computing allows people to connect via social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Steemit) as well as dedicated gaming networks for in-game conversations.

I just don't see VR arcades taking off unless they can offer something extraordinary.
