It is interesting to see how the meaning of the _curse of Turan_ changing as we go forward in time. In the 17th century they said it meant that Hungarians were forced to leave the ancient Gods for the sake of the Christian God.

Now as time passes we are in the 18th century the age of the "Kuruc".

In this age it was believed that the _curse of Turan_ struck the people down because they didn't rise against their oppressors or rather because God wanted to inspire the Hungarians to win their freedom.   

Thus it had the meaning that the Turanians, but mainly the Hungarians suffered a lot just so it could motivate them to win their freedom.  

They suffered a lot because they couldn't stand that the house of Hapsburg still entrench upon 1/3 of the country and the Turk entrench upon the other 1/3. 

Later in the 19th century the _curse of Turan_ was understood as that it meant to motivate the Hungarians to have an internal strife amongst them.   

It means that they didn't stick together, they were against each other and if a wiser or a more talented person showed up they wouldn't be happy about it. They would rather say why is it not me instead.  

One of our poet Janos Arany in one of his poems says:  

**"Bad neighbourhood Turk curse they aren't good friends"** 

In this line the "Turk" doesn't necessary mean Turkish it rather means Turanian. In that time Turk and Turanian were synonyms.  

To finish this part I would just add that in our national Anthem there is a line that says:  

**"Fate, who for so long didn't frown"**

It means that ill fortune has been anguished the Hungarians for a long time and it's the time since king Saint Stephen.
