A New World Record
After so many bad news from the World Athletic Championship that is taking place in Doha these days, today came the news that there's a new world record. [Olympic sprinter Allyson Felix just broke one of Usain Bolt's world records](https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/30/sport/allyson-felix-world-record-trnd/index.html?utm_content=2019-10-01T09%3A14%3A53&utm_term=link&utm_source=twCNNi&utm_medium=social)

This is very good news because this world championship is not like the others. Marathon runners were facing the extreme heat that made their life a living hell, some of them ended up in the hospital, others could not finish the race.

The other runners and competitors are lucky because they have the chance to compete in an air conditioned stadium, which helps a lot but the stadium is mostly empty. Why? Because in Doha (Quatar) people don't go to live sport event. There's a different culture and athletics is not so popular there.

While researching facts for this article I read that Doha submitted a bid for the 2016 Olympics but was eliminated for some unknown reason. Then [on August 26, 2011 it was confirmed that Doha would bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Doha however failed to become a Candidate City for the 2020 Games.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doha) I'm not being mean here but bidding for a big event like the Olympics or a World Championship takes more than being able to organize the games. Building stadiums and venues is just a part of the job, you have to be able to fill them with spectators who are enjoying the games and encouraging the athletes. Doha is not there yet.

[Allyson Felix](https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/30/sport/allyson-felix-world-record-trnd/index.html?utm_content=2019-10-01T09%3A14%3A53&utm_term=link&utm_source=twCNNi&utm_medium=social) is an American track and field sprinter who now holds the record for the most gold medals at the track and field World Championships. The previous record holder was my favorite, Usain Bolt, who else? :)

[The United States team of Allyson Felix, Wilbert London, Michael Cherry and Courtney Okolo after winning the gold (AP)](https://www.indiatoday.in/sports/other-sports/story/iaaf-world-athletics-championships-shelly-ann-fraser-pryce-allyson-felix-usain-bolt-gold-medals-world-record-1604728-2019-09-30)

Allyson Felix, Americans Michael Cherry, Wil London III and Courtney Okolo set up a new World Record time of 3 minutes, 9.34 seconds and also win the first-ever mixed-gender 4x400-meter relay. It's great to be the first one to do something as everyone is going to remember you and you have a place in the big book called history.

I'm happy for Allyson Felix because she had a rough period after giving birth. Giving birth to a child can change your life and career as well. Some athletes are able to regain their strength and stamina and are able to be as good as before, others can't. This is her first season as a mother and she has already accomplished so much.

>"If I come back and I'm just not the same, if I can't make a fifth Olympic team, I'm gonna know that I fought, that I was determined, and that I gave it my absolute all. And if it doesn't end up the way I imagined in my head, it'll be OK. I just have to go for it, because that's just simply who we are now." >Why? Because in Doha (Quatar) people don't go to live sport event. There's a different culture and athletics is not so popular there.

Whilst the locals are disinterested in live sport events, the foreigners have more to contend with a venue like Qatar. It is dusty, hot and humid. It is also expensive to get to, stay in and travel around.

These are all known facts, yet the governing body for the athletics went ahead with the decision to stage the event in Qatar. Next we are going to witness the same with the World Cup. The Qataris are not known to be fanatical about football either.

You're right. I think this was an attempt to attract tourists and money using the event but they are far from ready. As I said in one of my posts, you need more than a stadium or two to host an event.
I hope officials will be more careful next time when choosing a location.

Often athletic events (track and field) don't fill up staidums no matter where they are located. The spot just isn't that popular as far as live events go. Lots of time between events and multiple days for the events. I love track and ran it for a long time . But for the casual viewer it's a hard sale to try to get people to pay money to go watch. The mixed relay is one of the best additions to Track though!

Yesterday I did a post about it and it looks like this was a total disaster. There were days when there were only 1000 people in the stadium and those were mostly reporters.
