Introduction

Banner Saga is a turn-based medieval fantasy strategy game. You take the role of a leader of a caravan and travel with your people across the world that is presumably not going to last. Gods have died, sun has stopped and the whole world is swarmed by Dredges.

First Impression

Tactical strategy game with a fantasy/viking theme? Bring it on! I basically bought it just for the fights and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the story and the influence of your choices. The game is actually formed partly by the fights that I came for and partly by endless travelling of your caravan. During the travels every single day (sometimes even more than once) an event occurs. During those events you, as a leader of the caravan, have to decide which path to take, or how to deal with the situation at hand. Do not take those situations lightly though! This is not one of those games that makes you think that your decisions count. Here your decisions truly do count!

But before you make those decisions count, you have to travel…

Gameplay

First of all you need to take care of the caravan. And by take care I mean make sure they won’t die and maintain somewhat higher morale. The caravan consist of warriors, strong giant warriors and casual people. As you travel the days pass, the morale diminishes and food gets eaten. Quite often you are engaged in an interaction…

Or a combat…

But in order to reach those events, one has to travel…

The combat itself is rather minimalistic. There is not really bunch of tactical options at our disposal. Every single hero has one active and passive ability, armour and strength as primary stats. Secondary stats are armour break, points that can be used to support the strength of the attacks and maximum number of those points that can be used during one turn. Strength means damage AND health at the same time. Every time one attacks a choice between armour attack or health attack is made. The armour value blocks the damage if you go directly for the health. Every attack can be boosted if the morale or “bravery stat” is high. Well and that’s it basically. Also there is only handful of enemies. For 20 hours of gameplay it’s just enough I’d say.

The authors have obviously spent quite some time creating the lore of the world. A brief history of all the races and the world itself is presented throughout the game. One can also access the map at any given time that reveals all the additional lore. Be my guest and witness at least a portion of that…

I have bought the game few days ago during the Steam sales (they are still up make sure to pick up some games!). I still haven’t been able to beat it. I ran the very first try on hardest difficulty and even though I had some troubles here and there I managed to reach the end. The final boss is though MUCH harder than the rest of the game. If I knew better I would spend the few skill points I got throughout the game slightly differently, but still…be prepared to see this image quite often when you reach the final boss (in your language of course:D)…

I expected to win the game today after I spent few hours yesterday making a working battle plan…well I got close, but not close quite enough. You guys go and buy the game when its cheap (if it caught your eye of course) and let me destroy the immortal bitch once and for all…I will stand victorious today!

To sum this endeavour up. Expect a lot of travelling time. Expect a lot of kinda repetitive fights, but not too much to bore you to death. Expect TONS of hard choices that can lead to death of your warriors, ordinary people, but even heroes! Expect a catchy thought-out fantasy world. And most importantly expect quite a lot of fun:).

I love Banner Saga! I used to play Final Fantasy tactics, and this really made me feel nostalgic!

BTW, I created a New Year's Resolution/Community Engagement challenge, and would love to hear what you've got planned for 2018!

@jorlauski ·
that sounds like fun - I like games like this - I like games with really intricate story lines and and have a lot of thought put into them. Repetition in games like this bore me ... I need to look into this one - do you know if they have it for xbox?

Well in that case it seems like it’s 50/50 for you on this one. The repetitiveness is visible, but doesn’t last for long in my opinion. I only play on PC...I don’t know:)
