This weekend, Fenwick High School, a Catholic school in the suburbs of Chicago, competed against Plainfield North High School in the semifinals for the Illinois state championship. The winner of the game would earn the right to play in the championship game against East Saint Louis High School.

https://s11.postimg.org/8uaz16m03/ct_haugh_fenwick_plainfield_north_spt_1123_20161.jpg *Fenwick (in Black and White) ended up losing an opportunity to compete in the state championship game because of an undisputed error by the referees.*

With 4 seconds remaining in the game and leading 10 -7, Fenwick decided not to punt on fourth down. Instead, they instructed their quarterback to end the game by throwing the ball as high and as far out of bounds as possible. The quarterback successfully did this. The clock expired and the game was over. Then the referees got involved. The crew called a penalty for intentional grounding. Even this should not have been a problem because the rulebook states that the game should have been over. However, the referees incorrectly awarded Plainfield North an untimed down. Plainfield kicked a field goal to tie the game. Then Plainfield North won in overtime. The IHSA (who oversees high school sports) fully admits that the call was a mistake. The field goal should never have happened. Fenwick should have won the game. However, there is another rule that states that the referees’ decision *cannot* be overturned. Because the school does not want to deprive its students of the "once in a lifetime opportunity" to compete in the championship game, they have filed an injunction to stop Plainfield North from participating in the championship game. Many argue that Plainfield North should step aside and let Fenwick take their spot. Others argue that athletes have been taught all their lives that “what the ref says goes”. Who knows how many other calls were missed that game? A third group says that the IHSA should take the pressure off of both teams and rule that the game was absolutely over after that 4th down play. Nothing that happened after that play was “real”. http://abc7chicago.com/news/emergency-order-seeks-to-overturn-fenwick-plainfield-north-hs-football-game-results/1618968/ http://cookcountyrecord.com/stories/511047673-fenwick-h-s-sues-ihsa-over-blown-call-in-state-semifinals-football-playoff http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/ ### I am stuck squarely in the middle of this argument. I see all sides. What do you think? Who should be in the championship game? *[Image Credit](http://www.trbimg.com/img-58350960/turbine/ct-haugh-fenwick-plainfield-north-spt-1123-20161122)*

My thoughts are that if it is the incorrect call it needs to be reversed. I know how that looks but if something can be made right it needs to be. That is the path professional sports are going with instant replay reversing calls. It is no longer acceptable to say that a ref just blew a call. With technology there is a responsibility to get it right. The same thing applies here. It shouldn't be the fault of the players that the officials were incompetent...

That is an excellent point. I also question why no one simply took out a rule book and looked. It was also the very last play. They could have called the IHSA if they were not 100% positive. They made a huge mistake.

Exactly! They could suspend the outcome until they got an official ruling... The last play of the game is perfect for that kind of a thing...

Yes, I agree. It's a tough lesson for either side to learn, and the call was mishandled, but that would be the just result.

Maybe I'm being a dick about it, but both teams are aware of the rules. They are also aware that the refs call is final. Yes, the refs made a bad call. It happens. Shit happens. Disappointment happens. But so does grace in the face of adversity. The team who won on the bad call should go to the championship and they should do their DAMNDEST to win and show all the whiny babies they *deserved* the spot. My REAL opinion? It's a fucking GAME. There are bigger issues...but let's cry about our First World "problems" because disappointed teenagers made the news.

I don't think you are being a dick at all. But before I continue, I do want to stress that the is JUST A STUPID FOOTBALL GAME. In the grand scheme of things, this outcome means NOTHING. However I think sports do serve a purpose. They can be a *temporary* distraction from the real problems of the world. If all we did was think about the real problems in the world I think I'd stop getting out of bed. I would much rather argue about this nonsense topic at my in-laws today than real problems (because that argument may end in fisticuffs). So let's put this in the proper perspective. This is a silly thing to argue... but silly arguments can be fun and distracting. I completely get your point of view. I don't necessarily think anyone is being a "baby" about it though. It's such a bizarre situation. It has literally never happened in the state before. Refs make bad calls all the time... heck they may have made 50 during this game. Maybe Fenwick benefitted from 49 of these calls and should have lost 35-0. I have no idea. But this one was unique. The refs had all the time in the world to look at a rule book, call the state or just look it up on their phones. I think I may have picked a side. I am fine with appealing to the IHSA but anti getting any court involved. That would keep it in the proper perspective. Getting the court involved makes this seem like something bigger than it is. But appealing to the IHSA does show that if you believe in something, you should fight for it. Then again, I'd like to think that if I were the coach I'd look at my players and say "The Ref's call is final. Great season guys"... but that's easy for me to say because I don't have those parents breathing down my neck.

I completely agree that sports serve a very important purpose! Teamwork/collaboration, motor and fine skills, fitness, a sense of competition, lessons in how to be a gracious WINNER and how to be a gracious LOSER. In the Great Depression, there were 3 things that survived the terrible economy: Baseball, Booze and Beauty products. Those 3 things helped keep the mindset of people from being completely in the toilet. I found this link on the [Top-10 worse referee calls in NFL history](http://www.oregonlive.com/nfl/index.ssf/2015/01/top-10_worst_referee_calls_in.html) - it does indeed happen often...sometimes even affecting a playoff berth, and all the commercial & financial implications that goes with it. I have an athletic kid who played baseball and basketball in high school. ***The parents are an embarrassment!*** There are valid reasons why the amateur fields are fenced with bleachers set a good distance away. I've actually seen parents evicted to the parking lot because they got rabid and scared the kids. But let me come at you from my perspective...I think it's a huge disservice that a massive amount of money goes to sports and yet schools cut their music and art programs because they don't think it's important. Well, I've seen a bunch of news stories about kids dying or getting so injured that they will never be considered for sports scholarships or make it to the pros - but never ONCE have I met an artist or musician who regretted their craft. Maybe it's sour grapes. Maybe it's a minority voice of reason. Concerning this football event. Where is the grace in any of it? The ref will probably be harassed for as long as he lives. And even if the IHSA overturns the decision, you're going to have disappointed kids all around. I absolutely agree we need to fight for things we believe in. I am also a firm believer that we must pick our battles wisely.
