Schwarzie never claimed the title of "self-made man." For him, this title is a lie. You become what you are according who you listen to (and those you don't).

Being a bodybuilder, Arnold was focused on his muscles 7 days a week, 24h a day. However, he quickly became aware that this was never enough to reach his goals and that a healthy balance between mind and body was necessary.

Focusing on the body was no problem for me, and later on, I became really curious to develop my mind. I realized that the mind is a muscle and we should train it too. So I was determined to train my brain and get smart. I became like a sponge, absorbing everything around me. The world became my univesity, I developed such a need to learn and read and take it all in.

Especially when they have played Shakespeare! On the set of Conan, Arnold was struggling to deliver a long and harduous text. It turned out that James Earl Jones was great at giving advice about the delivery of a long monologue, with a tip which is still today quite helpful for aspiring actors.

He read it and asked me to deliver the lines. When I finished, he nodded and said, "Well, what I would do is have this retyped two ways. Do it once so that the lines are really narrow and go down the entire length of the page. And the second time do it with the paper turned sideways, so that you have the widest lines possible." He explained that I'd practiced so much that I had unconsciously memorized the line breaks. So each time I hit one, it came across as a break in thought. "You need to throw out that rhythm", he explained. seeing the lines retyped made me hear them in a different way, which helped tremendously.

Arnold married Maria Shriver who was part of the Kennedy clan. It means that their conception of a household couldn't be different enough. Something Schwarzie couldn't understand nor abide by.

When it came to the chores, we used the Schwarzenegger tradition. In Europe, you grow up helping to keep the house clean. You take off your shoes when you come in, otherwise all hell breaks loose. You turn off the lights when you leave the room, because there is a limited amount of power. You conserve water because somebody has to fetch it from the well. You are much more involved in the basics. I remember my shock when I first got to know Maria, who had grown up with people to pick up after her.

Arnold had two tumultuous but eventually successful turns as governor of California. He had to fight a lot for what he believed in, not only against Democrats but also against his own Republicans. He had his own vision, forged with the reading of Milton Friedmann for example and was never shy at explaining his political philosophy in straight terms.

I'm a tightwad when it comes to spending taxpayers' money, but I'm an equally strong believer in investing for the future. I had to educate the legislature about that, especially Republicans, who thought that building was the same as spending. When you spend money, it's gone. It's like building a house versus buying a new couch. Build a house and your investment returns value. Buy a couch, and the minute you take it out of the furniture store, it loses value. That's why I always say a house, you invest it; furniture, you spend money on.
