It's JUST a theory! | To przecież TYLKO teoria!

# Incomprehension
After writing an [article](https://steemit.com/science/@jakipatryk/gravity-makes-us-still-don-t-have-full-knowledge-of-the-universe-grawitacja-sprawia-ze-wciaz-nie-mamy-pelnej-wiedzy-o-dzialaniu) on gravity, in the comments, one of the Steemit users wrote that gravity is still unproven theory. I asked him what he meant, and he replied that in his opinion gravity is still a theory and that it does not have to exist. Let's miss the fact that this person believes in flat Earth. After these comments I decided to write a short post about what scientific theory is so that no one else would commit such a mistake.
# What is scientific theory?
In conversation with people not related to science, we often hear "it is **just** a theory." It is related to the fact that, in everyday use, **theory is misunderstood as scientific hypothesis** - the explanation of a phenomenon that has not yet been overthrown or confirmed by experiments. This is obviously a completely wrong thinking and leads to facilitation in the manipulation of people. So what is scientific theory? It is confirmed by experiments, a well-documented explanation for our observations. A scientific theory is what we strive for, the ultimate goal of research. So we can not say that something is "just theory," because theory must well describe the causes of phenomena on the basis of our current knowledge.

# Niezrozumienie
Po napisaniu [artykułu](https://steemit.com/science/@jakipatryk/gravity-makes-us-still-don-t-have-full-knowledge-of-the-universe-grawitacja-sprawia-ze-wciaz-nie-mamy-pelnej-wiedzy-o-dzialaniu) o grawitacji w komentarzach jeden z użytkowników Steemit napisał, że grawitacja jest wciąż niepotwierdzoną teorią. Zapytałem go, co ma na myśli, a ten odpowiedział, że według niego grawitacja jest wciąż teorią i to oznacza, że nie musi istnieć. Pomijam już fakt, że ta osoba wierzy w płaską Ziemię. Po tych komentarzach postanowiłem, że napiszę krótki wpis o tym, czym jest teoria naukowa, aby nikt więcej nie popełniał tego typu błędu.
# Czym jest teoria naukowa?
Podczas rozmowy z ludźmi niezwiązanymi z nauką ścisłą często słyszymy "no i co z tego, przecież to **tylko** teoria". Jest to związane z tym, że w języku potocznym mówiąc **teoria** ludzie mają na myśli **hipotezę naukową**, wyjaśnienie danego zjawiska, które nie zostało jeszcze obalone lub potwierdzone za pomocą eksperymentów. Jest to oczywiście całkowicie błędne myślenie i prowadzi do ułatwień w manipulacji ludźmi. Czym więc jest teoria naukowa? Jest to potwierdzona eksperymentami, dobrze udokumentowana hipoteza, a czasem zbiór hipotez wyjaśniających przyczyny zjawisk, które obserwujemy. Teoria naukowa jest tym, do czego dążymy, ostatecznym celem badań. Nie możemy więc powiedzieć, że coś jest "tylko teorią", ponieważ teoria musi świetnie opisywać przyczyny zjawisk na podstawie naszej obecnej wiedzy.

I am always introducing a theory to my students as: *a theory is a mathematical structure precisely explaining the ensemble of all experimental facts of a given domain. It can be used to make predictions and is thus testable*.
