I would say my early years was lived in poverty. I didn't really know it then. I mean, I knew we were poor, but I wasn't consumed by it or anything. Who needs toys when there's ample outdoor playtime. Either climbing trees, playing in the stream, or when I moved to the city for school, the beach and the playground. As for food, I didn't even know of fast food, and eating out was a treat. Besides I wasn't the biggest eater, so that was kind of a non-issue. I believe my Great Grand Parents from my mother's side had cows and lorries. But it was all lost in the war. Apart from a picture, I don't know anything about them. My Grandmother never really spoke about them and my Mother didn't really get to know them for they passed away when she was very young. My Grandmother ended up being a Single Mother of 4 by the time she was 19 and to leave a complicated situation out of this FreeWrite, she had another 4 kids by 25 but had to take care of all 8 on her own. Even though she didn't have much, my Grandmother agreed to take care of me and then my brother when we were ready to go to school. Mum thought it would be better to go to a school in the City compared to the small town she lived in with Dad. My parents too weren't doing well, barely making ends meet and so didn't really give anything to my Grandmother to take care of us. Granny never really complained about it though. She did what she could in her capacity. ***How poor were we?*** We did have a roof over our heads. It was a Government initiative for the poor where you are loaned a flat with very low rental until you are in a better place to move out. It was around 500sqf with one hall, one room, a tiny kitchen, toilet and balcony. At one point we had 11 people living there and at night, you had to be careful not to step on anyone because we would fit ourselves in any available space to sleep. For food we alternated between porridge with eggs and/or anchovies and rice with Rasam (Indian Soup) with eggs and or /anchovies and veggie. Some days we had fish like Selar Kuning (Yellowstripe Scad). Meat was for Christmas and maybe a birthday... depending. I didn't mind, I love Rasam... til today. We were the recipients of our Church's tithe. I remember my Aunty would go collect our allocation once a week. In school, we were part of the Food Aid Scheme where we were given a chip to exchange for food during Recess. We walked 4 miles one way to school and then back. We got one new attire a year, usually for Christmas. My brother and I traveled by bus to visit my parents during the school holidays. No luxury of worry to send two kids 500kms away, on their own and on trunk roads too. I used to have Motion Sickness and just had to deal with it on my own. With my 5 minutes almost up, I will wrap it with saying, that I wouldn't change a thing. It has shaped me to be who I am today and there's a certain pride to knowing that I overcame the challenges in my early years that prepared me for the challenges in my adult life. <center></center> *My Aunties and Uncle. My Grandmother is sitting with me in her lap.* ps: I was a precocious child, pampered by my parents in the early years and it was tough living with my Grandmother and Aunties who didn't like me very much. But today, I realize the challenges they themselves must have had having this child they couldn't get along with live with them. I am intrigued with your story and happy that you loved your Grandmother and Aunts. This was a very challenging childhood and you grew up a remarkable woman because of your upbringing. So far... it's like just a story I tell almost void of emotions :D They were kids themselves. They youngest, the one I had most trouble with was only 4 years older. Oh well.... it is what it is. My Grandmother really had a hard life... I think that generation coming out of the war, have so many stories... some so sad. Maybe I should start writing everything I remember down especially for the kids (and you ;p) just in case

That remins me of an old Italian movie. The movie was set in the time of a recession. (talking about poverty, btw) There was one opening for a typist and a long line of applicants ( women and young gals) was on the street. At the moment when the protagonist enters the office, one woman of around 45 is typing and showing some amazing hand speed, faster then the interviewer dictates. The interviewer sees it and utters in amazement "My God, lady... you are a machine gun!" "Yes" the lady responded with some sadness in her voice, "but an old machine gun" This was such a toughing nuance! Made me really feel for that woman. I remembered this for my entire life. *** Typing on mobile. That is a Hercules' labor. Young people do this with their thumbs. That's the clear cut indication of generation gap. )))

I enjoyed reading your life story. It is true as a child you do not suffer from having less as long as you can play and be a part of life or life the children of your age lived. So many things we saw as special, a treat are normal now. No fast food in my childhood either. I remember our "snack bars" came. The main thing sold was French fries with mayo or tomato ketchup. It was a treat. We indeed played outside or at school. I had no bike at the age of 2 or 3 years old. My first bike I got as I was 9 or 10 years old and on it, I also went to "high school". It was normal to wear clothes from my elderly sister and after me, my younger sister got them (no waste). We were forced to eat what was given. If you refused you got your plate with the next meal and the next and the next... If it comes to travelling it was the same here. It was told once and you went on your own. As I was 3/4 years old I walked a long distance to from Kindergarten to my granny and later as we moved a way longer distance. A few years ago I checked the distance by car. No parent would let a young child travel alone these days. You grew and it is good to hear you would not change anything if you could. I wonder if there was a special reason why your grandmother and aunts loved your brother and if your brother knew how you felt. Thanks for sharing this story. Oh my yes!! The bicycle.. didn't have tricycles either... I got on my first bicycle when I was 9 and it was my Dad's. It had a bar in the centre and I wasn't tall enough to reach the ground I needed to jump off the seat and be careful not to whack my crotch on that bar .... That was not a consideration for my Dad and it didn't stop me even with the many falls I had Would you believe me if I told you the last time I got on a bicycle around 2 years ago, I was screaming so much because I had forgotten how to cycle... fear had set in... the city had set in...shame on me!!....but that's a story for another day I think it was string of girls and then I came to join the pack. My aunties were kids themselves. The youngest, the one I had most trouble with was/is only 4 years older. And my grandmother probably didn't have the time or energy to deal with the nonsense after a hard day's work and I was the brunt of that. My brother and I were very close and still are. He was my only companion at home until my mother moved with the younger two when it was time for them to go to school. But being the favourite, my brother did get me into a lot of trouble unintentionally because he is 3 years younger and am sure was clueless to the consequences of certain actions. But honestly, all of this feels like a movie I had watched. It was so long ago Thank you @wakeupkitty for reading and sharing your stories with me I feel we are the lucky ones, with experiences money can't buy... hahaha, the irony :D

I doubt if tricycles exist. I can remember my dad pushed me once or twice on a large parking lot and that wad it. The rest I had to figure out myself. None of my kids had tricycles either and a bike as they were bigger or too big. You simply grew into it. I can still bicycle I did it a few weeks ago. I have a great bike we call "opoe fiets" a grannies bike. It is the official name but my granny had one too.
