The so-called 80/20 rule seems to apply to all sales personnel, whether they’re trying to sell Beverly Hills furnished apartments or small cogs that go into industrial production machinery, it always seems like a significant amount of the revenues are generated only by a small, dedicated few.</p> <p>This is naturally a problem for any company, since they’re essentially carrying around a rather large amount of “dead weight.” The troublesome part is figuring out what is the root of the problem and how to fix it.</p> <p>The problem could stem from weaknesses or gaps in their skill sets. For example, while they may know how to alter and twist the sales pitch to work on almost any customer, they may not be very good at closing the sale. Some sales personnel may have trouble with probing the potential buyers for more information, making it hard for them to overcome objections. Others may just need some kind of refresher course in the basics. Finally, there will always be those personnel who simply cannot perform to an acceptable standard.</p> <p>Depending on the cause of the problem, the fix can vary. For those that require retraining in one skill or another, the ideal solution is obvious. However, note that retraining someone should involve a program designed to reinforce the skill they’re lacking, instead of the broad strokes approach that many sales refresher courses turn out to be. This is because a skill problem in one area does not necessarily mean that they are lacking in other aspects of the game. A wide, basics-only refresher course only reiterates what they already know and does not address the problem.</p> <p>Regular refresher courses do have a purpose. More often than not, people with a lot of experience in a field tend to lose sight of the basics as time goes on. Since so many essential skills depend upon mastery of the first lessons, it pays to refresh their memories.</p> <p> <img src="https://pp.userapi.com/c837120/v837120687/6399a/rfZmIo7TX8Y.jpg" width="720" height="960"/></p> <p>Of course, in the situations where someone simply cannot – or will not – perform as they should, the only real solution is to remove them. Cutting out a diseased part will be difficult, but ultimately will serve to better the health of the whole.</p> </html>
