A Long History of Arrogant Claims to Own Others
The #arrogance of us humans has generated a long history of acting on the belief that it's OK, acceptable, correct, moral or "good" to trade in the lives of others, to own other free will beings.

Arrogance is to claim for ourselves that which isn't ours. How long with this desire continue?

The lives of other psychological beings are not our lives. They don't belong to us. We only own ourselves, not others (principle of self-ownership). To believe we can claim for ourselves the lives of other free will, thinking, feeling beings, is a false, wrong and incorrect way to live.

To engage in #slavery (or worse) is wrong, not right. Others are not our property. Theft of their freedom or lives is wrong, not right, and not a right we have to do.

![640px-Set_of_shackles,_late_18th_century_from_Tamale,_Ghana,_International_Slavery_Museum,_Liverpool_(2).JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVKuFZ91WNoJUejRcc3UH6eTKtb9NLLK2RcB5oTLni4e3/640px-Set_of_shackles%2C_late_18th_century_from_Tamale%2C_Ghana%2C_International_Slavery_Museum%2C_Liverpool_(2).JPG)

So long as another freewill agent does not harm us, we have no right to harm them (principle of non-aggression). The undue use of aggressive force is #violence and is an injustice. Only when #aggression to harm us is generated can we use due and just use of force as nonviolence to stop those who are violent and harmful.

Any actions we engage in that violate the freedom and life of others who did us no harm is never right, correct or true as a way and path of living.

Centralized authorities and their state gang-members are stuck in chains of obedience where they put people in shackles, regardless of what is right or wrong. Humanity is still putting other humans and non-humans in shackles (literal or not), making claims on others that we have no right to lay claim to.

Know and understand right from wrong; live rightly; live morally; live in the wisdom of right-action.

Men are rationalizing, not rational creatures.

Yes, trying to claim ownership of another man is wrong. It hurts the soul, and creates more hardship in the world.

However, the fact is that men are afraid. And to use your power to control other people is common response. And so arises slavery.

Slavery = a weak man who doesn't own up to his own fear, and so enacts out a plan to show he is not weak by dominating others.

I've often wondered why history repeats itself. I think that in order to fix the underlying cause of this particular issue, an entire societal change would need to happen. The tragic part of this? We're far from there; too far. Governments are just getting bigger, and citizens are beginning to matter less.

Ethical standards serve to regulate the actions of human beings, especially regarding their effects on other people. One of its fundamental characteristics is that they are universal, valid for any ethical subject at any time and place. Some rules can refer only to the agent and the action (smoking is forbidden), but the norms that also make explicit to the subjects receiving the effects of the action are much more complete and interesting.

Some attempts at universalization refer only to agents: that everyone uses the same rules of conduct. Universality is partial or incomplete, since the content of the norms distinguishes and discriminates diverse particular groups of people receiving the various actions (everyone is obliged to help those in need, it is forbidden to mistreat women).

Complete universality refers not only to the agents causing the regulated actions, but also to the recipients (beneficiaries or injured parties) of the effects of such actions. The norms are valid for everyone with respect to all, and this implies that the statements of the norms can only refer to each human being in the abstract, independently of their particular characteristics that would fit him in some subgroup of humanity (be more stable, like being black, or more circumstantial, like being sick.

> everyone is obliged to help those in need

That may be an ethical standard, imposed by conventions society/environment, but it's not a moral universal. No one is morally obliged to help those in need. The only moral obligation is to not harm others. Not helping others is not going something immoral.

Slavery does exist and probably always will. Selfish people and narcissists will try to own you. You may not have control over their behavior, however you have control o yourself. It is all in the mind. As long as you do not let them take ownership of your mind, they do not own you. They may think they do. You control how you will choose to react to such people. Will you get stressed out and upset? Or will you take charge of your own happiness? You can try to change the selfish and narcissistic. But only they can change themselves. And you are the captain of your own happiness. Take control of the helm today. wonderful article @krnel. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. Good points. One thing though, it overt slavery, it doesn't matter how free you are in mind, if someone enslaved you physically you are a slave :/ Also, negative things people do to you, can stress you out or upset you, that's a natural reaction to negative effects affecting you. We indeed can't make anyone change instantly, but we can influence people to change which takes time.

I agree with this statement. I strive for it, but I don't live it perfectly. I don't know anyone who does. So we bump off each other as we learn to do it better. Acceptance and forgiveness go a long way. The greatest challenge I see is that each persons definition of this is subjective.

The belief that coercive collectivism can be just to the individual is the most harmful mass psychosis on the planet. I keep thinking it must be a diagnosable mental illness to believe in the authority of centralized institutions to initiate force/violence against those who have done no harm. Strange how the psychiatric manuals don't categorize belief in big government as a mental illness despite the fact that the bigger a government gets, the more violence and aggression it invariably commits. Oh wait, Stockholm Syndrome...right...

This is certainly a good bench-mark when thinking about violence and aggression, although it would be interesting to read more of your thoughts on what exactly constitutes those two things.

For instance, would you agree that government policies which deliberately target poor people, depriving them of access to basic necessities such as housing and healthcare, are an act of violence? Are companies which pollute natural spaces and taint drinking water also being violent to the local people who rely on these resources?

If so, this would appear to legitimise some instances of violent protest under the principle of non-aggression. As it happens, I don't necessarily disagree with that line of reasoning, coming as I do from a Leftist perspective. As I suspect you are coming from a Libertarian perspective, it would be interesting to know whether you also agree, and if not, whether this changes how useful your terms are in describing the socio-political sphere.

> depriving them of access to basic necessities such as housing and healthcare

How is a government doing that specifically? Nothing in life is free. Reciprocate a service for money given. What do you mean?

Polluting the world we all do it with vehicles. We all buy products that are made with toxins, waste, poisons being dumped into the air, water and soil. We are all culpable with the purchases we make that sustain these industries. But yes, polluting the water and harming others is an act of violence.

Who initiated harm first? If there is harm being done to innocent people who did no harm, then physical action is allowed to stop it. Not that governments, police or the rest of a society will accept that because they are so conditioned into being pacifist cowards...

A situation that happens very often in my work comes to my mind. Where a person to be hiring a service believes that he owns us and feels the right to trample on us whenever he wants.
I think that is part of the lack of values that a large part of today's society lacks, in which respect for the other was lost.

One of the things I have seen during my life and which I personally rebel against is that wherever you are, whatever you do, either at school, at work or any human endeavor, you will always find a person who all of a sudden finds that he or she is the one in charge of things and starts making rules, you know x is not allowed, you can't wear x clothes around here, you can't say x words etc., and they succeed because a lot of people are willing to accept these people bossing them, I guess that is why governments came into being, people have to be told what to do, and if they are not told they just struggle along life without any aim. So I think the problem is inside each and every one of us, you have to rebel against authority from the moment you start seeing someone try to lord it over you, I think you have had enough after living with your parents, be your own person not what someone else wants you to be.
In fact I'm starting to see people telling you what to do here on Steemit which is supposed to be decentralized and a paragon of free speech.

Meh, to a certain extent. The real "lord" and ruler is morality and truth. That is what we need to put up as the authority in common for us all to agree upon, because it is what is and should be as a way of life. Anyone can tell anyone what to do, that doesn't mean it's the right things to do. Only do it if it's in alignment with what is right. Refuse to do it and reject what is right if you want, but know that you are rejecting what is right, and maybe rejecting it just because someone else told you you were wrong and the delicate ego can't handle being wrong much of the time ;)
