##### Probably, each read as a child, or listened to the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. Wonderful stories about wise and strict gods, courageous exploits of Hercules and other heroes, fearless Argonauts. Later in school we studied the "Odyssey" of Homer. Then at the institute in drawing lessons I tried to depict his plaster bust on paper. But only during the trip through Greece I realized how closely the events of these stories come into contact with reality.

##### I am often asked about our route and the peculiarities of the roads of Greece. With pleasure I will tell. I hope that my story will help you avoid some of the problems that we faced in May last year.

The port of our arrival was the city of Thessaloniki. The most affordable at prices from major cities in Greece. Here we rented a car and immediately ran into trouble. Free Parking in the nearest five blocks to the hotel was not, the whole roadside and even part of the sidewalks densely Packed with cars. Local residents only shrug their shoulders in embarrassment, and sadly shake their heads, confirming the presence of this problem and advising not to park in the second row, so as not to get an impressive fine. On European travel, we knew that underground parking was very convenient, but Thessaloniki disappointed us in this regard. So, tip number one: if you are planning to rent a car in Thessaloniki, be sure to choose a hotel with included parking costs. Otherwise, it may be that the parking space you will get almost at the price of the hotel. 

The second problem in Thessaloniki is the old part of the city with very steep slopes, the overcoming of which will require high driving skills. We happened to observe how the garbage truck unabashedly scratches cars parked on the roadside, squeezing along narrow streets with a gradient of almost 45 degrees. Should I come to this city, you ask? It is worth it if it is convenient for the chosen route and you plan to visit the nearby peninsulas of Halkidiki, the flying monasteries of Meteors, the factories for the production of mink coats and Mount Olympus.

Of course, we planned to see all this and a little more. As usual, we prepared for the trip in advance, uploading to the flash drive the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. From the speakers sounded "Iliad", and we already observed on the horizon the very place of residence of the supreme gods, about which Homer spoke. I really wanted to go up to Olympus, and even reserved the descriptions of the routes. But, at the top of the mountain there was snow, and my idea had to be postponed until the next visit to Greece. If your journey takes place in July, or later, be sure to make this ascent. The itinerary is very easy and affordable even for children.

After spending the night in the seaside town of Paralia, we went to the Meteors. On the phenomenon of soaring monasteries, I told in one of the [previous posts](https://steemit.com/travel/@marymik23/flying-monasteries-of-greece-part-one-interesting-story-18-photo). Here we decided to shorten the way and left the motorway. The landmark was the city of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki. The road went through fields and private territories. Gradually, the asphalt has disappeared, a dirt road has begun, along which no one has traveled for a long time. We realized that we made a mistake, but it was too late to change the route. The car crawled like a turtle, meeting on its way various obstacles. When we saw a fox not far from the road, who was looking at us with curiosity, we realized what kind of wilderness we were in. Later we learned from local residents that we were lucky to drive here, and if it was raining, we definitely would have to return to the motorway. I think the advice here is obvious: do not turn off the track on suspicious roads, even if they are marked on the navigator. As a result, turning off to Meteors we made a significant detour, but it was worth it.

Back at the sea, we enjoyed the sunset in the small town of Kamena Vourla. In general, I strongly advise you to rent a car and look at including non-tourist Greece. It was the nature of the country that left most impressions of the trip. These are stunning views of hills and fields with herds of sheep, gardens with olives, mountains on the horizon, shipyards on the sea coasts.

The second most beautiful mountain range in Greece is Parnassus. Be sure to visit the ancient city of Delphi, located here, it is worth your attention. By the way, I found an interesting relationship between Homer and the Delphic Oracle. There is a legend that Homer did not know anything about where he was born. It was the Oracle that told him that the mother was from the island of Ios, and also predicted the savior a ridiculous death from the fishing children.

But let's not talk about sad things. The next point of our trip was Athens. To see the Parthenon is the dream of every man who is at least familiar with the history of art. In this post I will not talk about this masterpiece of ancient Greek architecture, I will soon publish a separate story, with lots of photos and even video!

The problem with parking in Athens is less acute. But be prepared for the fact that the main sights will have to be reached on foot, since most of the historical center is the pedestrian zone. Realizing this, we threw the car near the hotel and went down the metro. By the way, if you can not afford trips to museums, get down into the subway and directly at the stations you will see practically the same exhibits for free. During the construction of the metro they were found so much that it was enough for museums and an exposition for decorating stations.

In Athens, a very developed taxi network. Most cars are comfortable yellow Mercedes. The fare is very affordable. So you can safely walk around Athens, and in the evening catch a taxi and get to the hotel without any problems.

We did not stay long in the capital and went to watch the Corinthian canal. The view is impressive, but you are unlikely to spend next to this trench in the surface of the earth for more than 30 minutes. Near the canal there are roadside cafes and souvenir shops, but they did not interest us.

We crossed the Peloponnesus and stayed overnight at a hotel near the city of Patras. There is a very beautiful bay overlooking the pantheon bridge and mountains. I want to give you one more advice about the overnight stay, which works practically in any country. If you are traveling without pre-booking hotels, then be sure to consider options not in cities, but in the suburbs, or in small towns nearby. The prices here are an order of magnitude lower, and the quality of the rooms and the service are at an altitude. By the way, if you want to explore the Greek islands: Zakynthos, Ithaka, Kefallinia, then from the Peloponessus you can cross them to the ferry. But if you decide to take a car, the cost of the trip will be quite significant, which stopped us. Prices can be found on the ferry's website.

By this time we traveled around Greece for about two weeks, so we decided that it's time to move back to the north of the country. From the Peloponnesus you can go on a huge cable-stayed bridge. For us, this route was the most acceptable, but the surprise was that the passage through the bridge is paid and costs 13 euros.

The return route we laid along the western coast of the country. In the town of Arta we drank cold frappe coffee and admired the ancient bridge. In Yanin, we walked around the lake and ate a delicious gyros. By the way, I will certainly tell about the Greek cuisine in one of the following posts.

Next, we fulfilled the mission of the long-awaited purchase of fur coats. If suddenly and you have such a need - go to the city of Kastoria in the north of Greece. There you will definitely find your dream. About 30 factories are located on the outskirts of the city. All you can go round in one day. The main advice is to decide in advance the shape, color, fur coat length, otherwise experienced salesmen will put the whole store on you and you will spend the whole day at one factory without buying anything. If you are interested in a detailed story about shopping in Greece - leave comments, I'm still wondering whether it makes sense to do a post about it.

Shopping is very tiring, so we spent the last days of vacation on the beaches of Halkidik. It is a peninsulas in the form of a trident on the coast of the Aegean Sea. Here we recalled the legend of King Egea, his son Theseus and the Minotaur. The local landscape reminded me very much of the Tunisian coast: there are huge sand-colored stones and algae deposits on the shore. Most of the local beaches are covered with snow-white white sand. It makes sense to come here during the season. Many private apartments that are rented at a very affordable price.

##### So we traveled almost the whole of Greece. Of course, we did not see everything, but we covered the most important sights, leaving a reserve for the future. Combining business with pleasure, we refreshed the myths of ancient Greece. And my daughter received as a gift the book "Gods and Heroes" by Nikolai Kun. This author is very accessible about Zeus and the gods of Olympus, about Prometheus, Hercules and other heroes. To read Homer to her while early.

#### В дороге с Гомером. Полезные советы о путешествии на автомобиле по Греции.

##### Наверное, каждый из нас читал в детстве, или слушал в исполнении родителей мифы и легенды Древней Греции. Замечательные истории о мудрых и строгих богах, отважных подвигах Геракла и бесстрашных аргонавтах. Позднее в школе мы изучали "Одиссею" Гомера. Потом в институте на уроках рисунка я пыталась изобразить его гипсовый бюст на бумаге. Но только во время путешествия по Греции я поняла насколько тесно события этих рассказов соприкасаются с реальностью.

##### Меня часто спрашивают о нашем маршруте и особенностях дорог Греции. С удовольствием расскажу. Надеюсь, моя история поможет вам избежать некоторых проблем, с которыми пришлось столкнуться нам в мае прошлого года.

Портом нашего прибытия был город Салоники. Самый доступный по ценам из крупных городов Греции. Здесь мы взяли машину на прокат и сразу столкнулись с неприятностью. Бесплатной парковки в ближайших к отелю пяти кварталах не оказалось, каждый пятачок и даже часть тротуаров плотно заставлены машинами. Местные жители только смущенно пожимают плечами, и грустно качают головой, подтверждая наличие данной проблемы и советуя не парковаться во втором ряду, чтобы не получить внушительный штраф. По европейским путешествиям мы знали, что очень удобны подземные парковки, но Салоники нас разочаровали и в этом плане. Итак, совет номер один: если вы планируете брать машину на прокат в Салониках, обязательно выбирайте отель с включенной стоимостью парковки. Иначе, может оказаться, что место парковки вам достанется практически по цене отеля. Вторая проблема в Салониках - это старая часть города с очень крутыми спусками, преодоление которых потребует довольно высокого мастерства вождения. Нам довелось наблюдать, как грузовик для уборки мусора невозмутимо царапает припаркованные на обочине машины, протискиваясь по узким улочкам с уклоном практически под 45 градусов. Стоит ли приезжать в этот город, спросите вы? Стоит, если это удобно для выбранного вами маршрута и вы планируете посещение расположенных рядом полуостровов Халкидики, летающих монастырей Метеоров, фабрик по производству норковых шуб и горы Олимп. 

Конечно, мы планировали посмотреть всё это и немного больше. Как обычно, мы заранее подготовились к путешествию, закачав на флешку мифы и легенды Древней Греции. Из динамиков звучала "Иллиада", а мы уже наблюдали на горизонте то самое место проживания верховных богов, о котором вёл речь Гомер. Я очень хотела подняться на Олимп, и даже запаслась описаниями маршрутов. Но, на вершине горы еще лежал снег, и мою затею пришлось отложить до следующего посещения Греции. Если ваше путешествие состоится в июле, или позднее, обязательно совершите это восхождение. Маршрут очень легкий и доступный даже для детей.  

Переночевав в приморском городке Паралия, мы отправились к Метеорам. О феномене парящих монастырей я рассказывала [в одном из предыдущих постов](https://steemit.com/travel/@marymik23/flying-monasteries-of-greece-part-one-interesting-story-18-photo). Здесь мы решили сократить путь и съехали с автомагистрали. Ориентиром служил город Kalabaka и поселок Kastraki. Дорога шла через поля и частные территории. Постепенно, асфальт исчез, началась грунтовая дорога, по которой явно давно никто не ездил. Мы поняли, что совершили ошибку, но было уже поздно менять маршрут. Автомобиль полз как черепаха, встречая на своем пути разные препятствия. Когда мы увидели неподалёку от дороги лису, которая с любопытством разглядывала нас, мы поняли в какую глушь попали. Позднее мы узнали у местных жителей, что нам повезло проехать здесь, и если бы шёл дождь, нам однозначно пришлось бы возвращаться на автомагистраль. Думаю, совет здесь очевиден: не сворачивайте с трассы на подозрительные дороги, даже если они обозначены на навигаторе. В итоге, сворачивая к Метеорам мы сделали значительный крюк, но это того стоило. 

Вернувшись к морю, мы наслаждались закатом в небольшом городке Kamena Vourla. Вообще, я очень советую брать в аренду автомобиль и смотреть в том числе не туристическую Грецию. Именно природа страны оставила наибольшие впечатления от поездки. Это потрясающие виды холмов и полей со стадами овец, сады с оливами, горы на горизонте, судоверфи на морских побережьях.

Второй по красоте горный массив Греции - это Парнас. Обязательно посетите древний город Дельфы, расположенный здесь, он стоит вашего внимания. Кстати, я обнаружила интересную взаимосвязь Гомера с Дельфийским Оракулом. Существует легенда, что Гомер не знал ничего о том, где родился. Именно Оракул рассказал ему о том, что мать была родом с острова Иос, а так же предрёк сказителю нелепую смерть от детей, которые ловили рыбу.      

Но не будем о грустном. Следующим пунктом нашего путешествия были Афины. Увидеть Парфенон - это мечта каждого человека, который хоть немного знаком историей искусств. В этом посте я не буду рассказывать об этом шедевре древнегреческой архитектуры, скоро опубликую отдельную историю, с множеством фотографий и даже видео!

Проблема с парковкой в Афинах стоит менее остро. Но будьте готовы к тому, что до основных достопримечательностей придется добираться пешком, поскольку большая часть исторического центра - это пешеходная зона. Понимая это, мы бросили машину рядом с отелем и спустились в метро. Кстати, если вы не можете позволить себе походы по музеям, спускайтесь в подземку и прямо на станциях вы бесплатно увидите практически те же экспонаты. Во время строительства метро их было обнаружено столько, что хватило и на музеи и на экспозицию для украшения станций.

В Афинах очень развита сеть такси. Большинство машин - комфортабельных желтые мерседесы. Стоимость проезда весьма доступна. Поэтому вы можете спокойно гулять по Афинам, а вечером поймать такси и без проблем добраться до отеля.

Мы не стали надолго задерживаться в столице и отправились смотреть Коринфский канал. Вид его впечатляет, но вы вряд ли проведете рядом с этой траншеей в поверхности земли более 30 минут. Именно столько потребуется времени, чтобы сделать фотографии. Рядом с каналом есть придорожные кафе и сувенирные лавки, но нас они не заинтересовали. 

Мы пересекли Пелопонесс и остались ночевать в гостинице рядом с городом Патры. Там очень красивый залив с видом на пантовый мост и горы. Хочу дать вам еще один совет по поводу ночлега, который работает практически в любой стране. Если вы путешествуете без предварительного бронирования гостиниц, то обязательно рассматривайте варианты не в городах, а в пригороде, или в небольших поселках рядом. Цены здесь на порядок ниже, а качество номеров и обслуживание на высоте. Кстати, если вы хотите осмотреть греческие острова: Закинф, Итака, Кефаллиния, то с Пелопонесса  можно переправиться к ним на пароме. Но если вы решите взять с собой автомобиль, стоимость поездки будет довольно значительной, что нас и остановило. Расценки вы можете найти на сайте паромов. 

К этому моменту мы путешествовали по Греции уже около двух недель, поэтому решили, что пора двигаться обратно на север страны. С Пелопонесса можно выехать по огромному вантовому мосту. Для нас этот путь оказался наиболее приемлемым, но неожиданностью стало то, что проезд по мосту платный и стоит 13 евро.

Обратный маршрут мы проложили по западному побережью страны. В городке Арта пили холодный кофе фраппе и любовались старинным мостом через изумрудную речку с форелью. В Янине гуляли вокруг озера и ели вкуснейший гирос. Кстати, я обязательно расскажу о греческой кухне в одном из следующих постов.

Далее мы выполнили миссию по долгожданной покупке шубы. Если вдруг и у вас есть такая необходимость - отправляйтесь в город Kastoria на севере Греции. Там вы обязательно найдете свою мечту. Порядка 30 фабрик расположены на окраинах города. Все можно объехать за один день. Главный совет - заранее определитесь с фасоном, цветом, длиной шубы, иначе опытные продавцы наденут на вас весь магазин и вы проведете целый день на одной фабрике, ничего не купив. Шопинг очень утомляет, поэтому последние дни отпуска мы повели на пляжах Халкидик. Это полуострова в форме трезубца на побережье Эгейского моря. Здесь мы вспомнили легенду о царе  Эгее, его сыне Тесее и Минотавре. Местный ландшафт очень напомнил мне побережье Туниса: встречаются огромные камни песочного цвета и залежи водорослей на берегу. Большая часть местных пляжей покрыта белоснежным белым песком. Сюда имеет смысл приехать в сезон. Много частные апартаментов, которые сдаются по вполне доступной цене. 

##### Так мы объехали практически всю Грецию. Конечно, мы посмотрели далеко не всё, но охватили самые основные достопримечательности, оставив задел на будущее. Совместив приятное с полезным, мы освежили в памяти мифы древней Греции. И моя дочь получила в подарок книгу "Боги и герои" Николая Куна. Этот автор очень доступно рассказывает о Зевсе и богах Олимпа, о Прометее, Геракле и других героях. Читать Гомера ей пока рановато.
