 # Situated in Wollongong's own creatively-coloured _Globe Lane_, Kürtősh adds Hungary's sweet culture to the menu. # # What's on the menu? # _Cakes, Kürtősh and Coffee_. # Kürtősh is divided into two sections; a coffee bar at the rear and the cake display at the front. Both run down the edge of the cafe. # The cake display has an enormous array of slabbed cakes from chocolate to tiramisu and almost everything in between. Beware, though they might look and taste delicious, they're full of eggs and dairy. In case you're trying to trim down, it must seem obvious, but these are some of the nastiest foods you can put in your body. Let's be real. Eggs and dairy aren't good in any quantity. # # A better option is the vegan Kürtősh! # As a vegan, the cake display is off limits, however, the Kürtősh bar, which is nearest the front window has plenty to choose from. And most are vegan, just check with the staff. We found the one we like after trying all of the vegan options over the years. #  # _The caramelised hazelnut is the way to go. After the dough is rolled, it's sprinkled with hazelnut pieces, then dusted in sugar. When cooked, the sugar caramelises and hardens into crispy, nutty chunks._ # The first time we came to this establishment a couple of years ago, the Kürtősh was golden, a twist of perfection. Every other time, I've found them slightly overcooked. And one thing I know about sugar is that golden turns to burnt in the time it takes to grumble about having to make _another_ Kürtősh for a customer. # # Below par customer service in action. # I recently read an article and a few other reviews dating back to 2017 [raving about the food here](http://www.iatemywaythrough.com/2017/03/kurtosh/). Of course, that's one side of the many facets of a food establishment. # There is nothing I care less for than unsatisfactory service. Don't get me wrong, the young lady who served us was not overly energetic and conversational but she was courteous. However, the Kürtősh chef, whose role may have been _store manager_ as he was running about the place in a managerial type of way, was perturbed that we had been so bold as to add another pastry to his workload. He informed us that there was going to be thirty minutes to wait [on a Saturday afternoon] for a Kürtősh. Despite his rudeness, I was happy to wait as we ordered coffee and tea and shrugged off the needless bad attitude. #  # _The tea and coffee were presented professionally, yet weren't as hot as we would have liked._ # Unfortunately, the coffee and tea that were brought out to us soon thereafter, weren't as hot as I'm accustomed to. I'm not a piping hot coffee drinker, but when you are able to gulp the coffee, it's not hot _enough_. Hayley's tea was also apparently on the cool side also. However, we both appreciated the heavy-duty tea pot. It was cute, but boy, did it have some weight behind it! # # The industrial cum steampunk-esque interior could easily have been inspired by the pages of Jules Verne. # Sitting up the back of the tunnel-like cafe, you don't have to imagine what eating in a dimly lit tunnel is like. The choice of globes was based purely on aesthetic, not functionality. The worm- like filaments looked like they were simply _painted_ yellow as I counted 12 electrons pass through the globe above above us as it barely emitted a glow. I do appreciate the warmth of this type of lighting and ambience, although there needs to be a few decorative elements to hold the warmth that the bodies of customers bring into the cafe. # # Let's just take a moment to think of how best to spend $50k on (quite possibly needless) renovations. # Woods, old furniture or even partition screens to break up the cavernous feel of the deepest part of the space wouldn't be lost on Kürtősh. # An obvious addition would be a fireplace. The numerous gas options available would _really_ adjust the feel in there and play some crazy shadows against the deliberately unloved exposed brick walls. I love the old penny farthing bicycle (presumably a replica and not an original) and the exposed ducting. # I can actually imagine the place fitted with brass portholes on the walls and a giant, clear, cylindrical chamber in the centre of the rear space filled with bubbling water around an early 20th century metal diving suit. #  # _[Source](https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/io9.gizmodo.com/the-strange-and-wonderful-history-of-diving-suits-from-1262529336/amp). Imagine gurgling water and turbulent bubbles swirling about this contraption._ # # Why you should come. [And you should.] #  # If you're already in Wollongong, Kürtősh offers something unique in the way of both eats and overall experience. As you pull apart the tasty, doughy spiral, you'll see steam bellow out. It is a delicious treat you should share with a date or friend. Half is certainly enough. # # Opportunities for the proprietors. # I'll be frank. Smiles aren't an overhead cost. The Kürtősh bar could be better prepared for busy times by employing an extra hand, purchasing another machine or having more dough made up. Unless the customer requests cooler coffee, when you bring it to the table, tell them it's piping hot for their sensory enjoyment. No one likes luke warm coffee and a short wait is manageable if you like it cooler. # # A final (non-Kürtősh related) thought. # As Hayley and I were sipping our drinks, I couldn't help but reminisce about previous travel experiences. We both love Harry Potter and remember watching the construction of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter being built in Osaka within the Universal Studios theme park. Less than two years later, we were in Orlando experiencing it. This year, we may just find ourselves back in the land of the rising sun (my favourite travel destination) to enjoy the completedJapanese version of the WWoHP. This dessert is originally from Czech Republic and it's called 'trdelnik'. How great that you can find it in Hungary and even in vegan option!!! So strange that tea and coffee weren't hot enough. I was lucky by now and haven't experienced it yet! I think I would have returned it as I'm a piping hot coffee drinker :)
