Ledebourias on the hill and in the garden

_Ledebouria ovatifolia_

_Ledebouria_ are very variable and widespread members of the Hyacinth family of plants in South Africa and like most of the bulbs found here, they can be poisonous, containing digitalis-like substances that can affect the heart although they are used externally medicinally but even more so for magical herbal mixtures used to protect the house, mainly because when crushed, the sap is sticky and itchy and irritating to the skin

The flowers are all usually purple and grow in clusters on the stem, which is typical for Hyacinths

This species of Ledebouria grows in my garden, it's probably an _ovatifolia_ although it comes from the Eastern part of the country. _Ledebouria_ isn't endangered but it is illegal to collect and remove wild plants - this one was given to me by someone who got it from a medicinal herb market. I'm a bit ambivalent about buying plants from traditional herb markets: although these plants may be collected and sold by traditional healers, buying them to plant only encourages more wild harvesting. People who disagree argue that they are "saving"the plants. I'm not so sure, because many wild plants are highly adapted to their ecological niche, dislike being transplanted and simply die.

I have 3 of these bulbs which all survived there journey through the markets and various people's hands and have grown for a year in my garden. They are an easy species to grow, needing only well draining soil and a few hours of sun a day. These new leaves are just emerging for spring and they may darken, or not, it's a highly variable species and I'm not sure if they will flower this season because normally these bloom in spring. Whenever wild bulbs are transplanted, it may take a few seasons before they settle in and start flowering: while they are easy to grow, they don't like being disturbed.
