Wildflower series ~ the minimalists

_Anthospermum hispidulum_ are wind-pollinated plants so they don't bother with any external decorations to attract pollinators. The flowers you see in the picture are female and all those filaments do is receive pollen that is carried on the wind. The plants are usually unisexual, meaning that they either make male or female flowers on the same plant, not both. I didn't see any male plants nearby but perhaps they weren't flowering at the time and the flowers are really easy to miss.

I have read scientific studies that were done on this plant to study which compounds it contains; ursolic acid and scopoletin were isolated ~ these are known to have anti-cancer activity for certain types of human cancers but I'm not aware of a widespread medicinal use.
