We’re happy to share a few highlights about what happened previous week in crypto 😎🎉

We start out with some bullish news with bitcoin futures contracts reaching record highs of $546 million on April 4, with over 22,000 unique contracts. The previous record was set back in mid-February with around 18,000 contracts. The new record came after a very abrupt surge in the bitcoin price in early April of around 20%.

Next we have some less than bullish information regarding Ripple as Japan’s Resona Bank decided to withdraw from the “MoneyTap” agreement. This can come as a surprise as Resona was one of the first companies to join the alliance. There are now 12 companies/ 13 who signed, showing the first sign of weakness for the adoption of the remittance platform in Japan.

The Chinese chip manufacturing giant, Bitmain has announced the release of a new Antminer 17-series chip planned to hit consumers in the coming months. The new chip is based on the 7 nm chip technology, can offer up to 53 TH/s, outpacing most widely used miners at the moment. The planned release comes with mixed messages following a recent report of China potentially banning mining in the country.

The US SEC has recently made some additional comments regarding framework for determining cryptocurrencies and how they are should be classified. The statement mentions: “the framework is not intended to be an exhaustive overview of the law, but rather, an analytical tool to help market participants assess whether the federal securities laws apply to the offer, sale, or resale of a particular digital asset.” Although the statement is nothing final, it does offer additional guidance.

In the most high profile story of the week, Julian Assange has been arrested following his expulsion from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. It is reported that Assange has raised over $20,000 worth of funds in various cryptocurrencies within 24 hours of his arrest. The proceeds are being donated to his defense fund as he is facing extradition to the USA under conspiracy charges.
