 Love them or hate them, memes are here to stay. You know they've become mainstream when typing "meme" doesn't flag a spelling error anymore and you can even have an entire online conversation in "meme". As harmless as most of them are, there can be some dire consequences, as at least ten prospective Harvard students found out, when they [had their acceptance letters rescinded](http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2017/6/5/2021-offers-rescinded-memes/). ## So what was so bad about the memes? The private Facebook group chat, which was entitled *"Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens"*had images of: - the hanging of a Mexican child called "pinata time" - images joking that abusing children was sexually arousing - mocking sexual assault - mocking the deaths of children ## Something, something free speech With at least ten students having their offers to Harvard rescinded and possibly more to come, some might argue that doing so was a violation of the students' free speech rights. What do you think? My personal take is that by that same reasoning, Harvard has the right not to want to their name be associated with "horny bourgeois teens". "The United States Constitution applies to the government, not to corporations. A private business, large or small, can legally ignore your freedom of speech." [link](http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123024596) It's weird to think of a university as a corporation, but that's what they are. It's a little easier to think of Harvard as a corporation when you look at how much profit they make annually (sometimes even more than fortune 500 companies: [link](https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/09/is-harvard-so-rich-that-it-should-literally-be-illegal/280002/)). You have to figure this decision comes down to money. They think that if word gets out that Harvard students are racist and evil, it'll be bad press for the university and maybe that next endowment isn't as big as before.
