Really great post - and series. I hadn't considered that yes, for every $1 not spent it's more like $2 saved. I'm going to remember that!

What comes to mind when watching this series is the several passages in Proverbs that talk about the value of planning ahead, working hard (and smart), and the idea of a family working *together* to solve problems and make a life.

Thanks alot for the insights in what you are planning and i agree less money you need is absolutely more freedom especially with the interests that you mention in the last part ...

The reason I interact with you as much as I do or can is because you have an extreme love for family, friends, nature and life in general. You are what I have been calling a "Humane Being",  imho what we ALL need to work on more.
This video briefly gets into the "economics" and your philosophy of "Homesteading". The term itself is so strange to me, as if it were something new. Imho, it just means living a life how "man/human beings" are supposed to live.
When you start getting into the math, the economics, and yes, profitability makes so much sense. But to be honest, I always have to laugh at the statement "saving 1 dollar is actually 2". It IS true !, But I don't like the math ... here is why.
Say you make $10 an hr. at a 9-5 job. Your away from family ....
Say you make $10 an hr. at home. Yes the math dictates you save on fuel, can make more money at home because you don't have travel to work time deducted from your money making time at home, save on food, by growing your own, save on babysitters etc. The list IS endless ... BUTTTT ! What is Not mentioned or included in the math, is the VALUE of spending time with your family. To me, spending time with kids is worth $1000's per hr. Plain and simple.  How many men didn't get to see their children take their 1st steps OR say their 1st words !!!  THATS just a damn shame ..

To me my man, YOU ARE VERY wealthy ! Your basic and advanced economics are "THE" way to go, lol !

Trying to build a homestead and it is hard to save when you are trying to build debt free.

All very interesting and good reasons to make homesteading your goal in life. So it made me curios about how much I pay in rent for a year. It turned out I have to work 23 (40 hour) weeks a year to just pay my apartment rent. And 6 (40 hour) weeks to pay our utility bills a year. If I didn't pay for those I could have a piece of land in 3 years. Makes you think. but also if I didn't pay those I would be homeless.

Nice video papa-pepper. I've been enjoying going through your posts and love that you're getting the message out there of a debt-free and simpler way of life. Not only is becoming more self sufficient saving you money, but so is finding the joys of a simple lifestyle. Great example you shared at the end in regards to interest: people don't think much already about the extra thousands of dollars an item may cost them beyond the ticket price in interest, but you're also giving up the time in your life (working to earn the money) to pay that interest. We live in an age, and a country, where people can have the big house (bigger house.... BIGGER house) a boat, ATVs, snowmachines (that's snow mobiles for you non-Alaskans) and STUFF in abundance. That stuff can be fun, but when you're gathering debt upon debt for all that, it's not worth it!

Although we're not homesteaders, my family likes to seek a more minimalist life-style than the norm. When you don't have all that "extra" you've got more time to spend together as a family. You can still have some of those extra things (or useful in practical ways, especially if you're homesteading), but with some patience and dedication it's much better to buy them outright than pay even more just to access that money sooner. Be patient, make wise decisions, and accept some compromise up front to result in a much happier, more satisfying life.

Really interesting post and video @papa-pepper. Debt is a real killer and ultimately keeps people tied to jobs that are not fulfilling. People seem more interested in what is supposed to make them happy or what they are told to make them happy rather than really figuring out what actually makes them happy. 

Consumerism rarely seems to offer much fulfillment. Buy one thing, discard it and then buy something else just to discard it. I find long lasting happiness does not require the purchase of stuff that initially feels appealing.  In order to support this spending we are forced to sacrifice our time doing unfulfilling work. It just takes the courage to break this cycle.

Every dollar I don't have to pay the tax man is a dollar in my pocket. Being almost totally self-sufficient is a blessing. Teaching your children to also live a self-sufficient debt free live is truly worth it...

Very wise “decrease cost of living to increase the quality of life.” Many seem to have it upside-down “increase the cost of living to decrease the quality of life.” 

I know many people who moved to big city’s chasing after the big paychecks. They never been poorer in their life and rent along with food costs so high. That is no way to live life. Yet they still think it going work out they just need to "make a bit more." Where more is never enough.

My husband and I have strive to be debt free. We have very little debt and we are going to into a little but for our house build but it isn't much and is less than what rent costs. But we bought our land outright and if everything goes in with-in 10 years maybe less since each week here seems to be getting better and better, we will have what loan we are taking out paid back. In two years I should have my student loans paid off and then we will be able to apply that money to the house loan too. Would love to have all the debt paid off in 5 years instead of the 10 years we calculated it will take. My husband does work long hour shifts that are around 13 hours but he works a rotating shift so out of every 14 days he only works 7 days. 2 days on 2 days off 3 days on 2 days off 2 days on, 3 days off. Then it starts all over again. It is nice he was able to find a job like that, because before he found the job he has now, he was gone 60+ hours a week 5 days a week. 
It sucked.
