A surprise at a local Elgin Railways Market!

So this is the place that everyone was talking about!

As far as I was concerned, it was only the scenery that enhanced the looks of the old decrepit buildings. But a huge surprise awaited us, as we ended up in a most fantastic place.
But allow me to show you the surprise!

This was one of the old buildings that a young entrepreneur bought and he revamped the entire building into a modern concept by combining the old with the new!

The new fans in the roof are belt driven according to the old saw mill concept!

An old Packhouse shed that was re-designed into a cozy meeting place for farmers and visitors from all over the world!

Small shops selling fresh produce and treats from local farms lined the sides of the huge hall!

Here we have the wine counter that stocks vintage wines from the Elgin farms!

And finally a local musician to keep the visitors in tune!

Oh yes, many new surprises awaits us here at our new home and I simply love to make new discoveries. At the market this morning we must have heard languages by the visitors from many countries and some export farmers were also meeting with their clients from Europe and other places here. Indeed a classy gathering place for families and friends and the food was great!

The parking and entrance is free and all are welcomed at the huge doors by staff with even bigger smiles. Security is present all over the place and some of the staff are appointed to entertain the children. Really a great place to visit and the young man that started this faces a great future.
Maybe they will have a look at the other old buildings and find creative uses for them here at the old Elgin Railway Station.
A wonderful concept indeed!

Huh, what a cool place!! Didnt expect that to be inside

We also have this in Eindhoven a lot. Old Philips factories are remodelled into bars and houses, kind of cool right?

That does look splendid.

I use to travel between Bredasdorp and Cape Town along that way. But I guess it was like this back in the 80's!

What a treat finding old buildings having new life breathed into them @papilloncharity that is a magnificent restoration! 

Sadly our rail system has disappeared with only a couple of routes on specific days still running _(at a price)_. We enjoyed travel by train in fact it was the only way holidaying was accomplished as a family when I was young.

@joanstewart Ironically I was placed at 1SAI in Oudtshoorn during my army days and twice had the honor of travelling on the 3day milk train to and back from Johannesburg. 3days there with a 3 day return, as the milk train stopped at every station. How well do I remember the sweet sound of a steamer's horn and at night the clickety clack that puts one to sleep. So sad that all of this is no more Lady Joan. So very sad! Blessings!

Longest journey we undertook as a family (4 children) Johannesburg- Salisbury-Bulaway-Vic Falls-Bulawayo-LM Mozambique then all the way home again if I remember correctly it took 3 weeks. 3 day stop off at Vic Falls and 2 days in LM (Mozambique) that was back in 1963/64 December school holidays. Very brave parents  😊 

Looking back now I sometimes wonder how they managed with 4 brats on trains as well as they did.
