#### <p><center>Portara is the huge marble gate of a century-old temple that began to be built in the 6th century BC. Probably in honor of god Apollo, in the island of Naxos. It is located on "Bacchus Island" at the northern end of the port of Naxos. According to mythology, on this island Theseus abandoned Ariadne, which Dionysus later abducted.</center></p>

#### <p><center> The construction of the temple begun  around 530 BC, under orders of the tyrant Lygdamis, who aspired to build a building similar to the temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens. In 524 BC Lygdamis is beaten by the Spartans and construction is halted thus the temple remains incomplete.Later on, the Christians built the church on the ruins of the ancient temple, while during the Venetian occupation many pieces of the temple were used to build the castle of Naxos.</center></p>
