Pretty sure comments can be gamed too, a comment bot would be trivial to write. Ultimately, it's just another view of the data and if it gets abused, people just won't look at that view as much (or filters will be added to allow users to filter out the upvotes by accounts that they find annoying for some reason).

Comments would be more visibly obvious and would be more obviously spam. Spamming upvotes isn't seen unless you're looking for it, and most users won't be.

Just a thought , could you use something like  reCAPTCHA  when posting a comment to cut down on a bot spamming the system?

The challenge with Steem is that there is no gatekeeper on what can get into the database (other than bandwidth/rate limiting).  All filtering must be done after the fact.

At this point, active is better than recent and trending. After July 4th, trending should probably be pretty good. Eventually there will be personalized feeds.

I like the idea of "Active Post" option very much! 
Maybe it would help not to game it if on the equation is added the VOTING POWER...So bring up the posts that had greater QUALITY activity, posts that get upvoted from more powerful voters. At least it should be weighted to that direction. Maybe give more time to them... allow them to stay more time up on the list.
   That would also give much more motivation to POWER UP accounts
