The holy grail of medical science in many ways has always been the regeneration of damaged or lost parts of the body. In this case, scientists have managed to trigger enhanced limb regrowth by applying Progesterone to the amputation of of the hind leg of African Clawed Frogs.

While some amphibians, such as salamanders, are capable of full regeneration, African Clawed Frogs lose much of their regenerative abilities as they age. Their tadpoles have been documented regrowing functioning lost tails while adults can only form limb spikes of cartilage. This sort of inactive, middle-of-the-road regenerative ability makes these frogs an appealing target for nascent efforts to pinpoint promising routes to pursue the activation of regenerative effects in mammals and eventually humans.

Progesterone, in particular, was used due to its natural presence in the human body and safety. Progesterone is responsible for the replacing of the uterine lining each month. It's capable of more than that however, according to Dr. Régine Sitruk-Ware, "It’s helpful for the uterus, but in many other layers of the body—in vessels, in bone, in the brain, and in the [nervous system] in general—progesterone has a positive, regenerative aspect." Seeing this research combined with previous research into bioelectrical signals' effects on the shaping of regenerative limbs could yield some truly interesting results.
