China #14: The journey to the holy mountain [EN/GER]

We start our day with a relaxed breakfast at the hotel. For once, we have local breakfast instead of western-styled breakfast – we really enjoy it!

Afterwards, we once again stroll through Xi'an and over the stands in the Muslim Quarter.

In the afternoon we head off for the bus station to go to **Huashan**. We will stay there one night and do a big hike. We are so pleased to finally get away from the megacities and into nature!

The mountains at Huashan are famous for their **beautiful rock faces and nerve-racking treks at dizzying heights**. In total, you can climb up to four peaks: The North, South, East and West Peak. We have all on the program!
Sounds good? So, let's go!

We arrive in the evening after 3 hours bus ride in the small town and immediately find our hotel.
The next morning, a taxi takes us to the visitor center where we buy tickets and decide to take the gondola to the North Peak.

The gondola ride is not for the faint-hearted...

Arrived on the North Peak, we are happy to find that very little is going on - we are quite early. It is just 08:00 clock in the morning.

We enjoy the view, the clear air and the pleasant temperatures. Then, we continue to the East Peak, where you can find the famous **Chess Pavilion**. The so-called "trail" consists exclusively of stairs – Chinese hiking-style, right? ;-)
After countless stairs we make a first breakfast break with a wonderful view.

Countless red ribbons and locks line the paths and symbolize eternal happiness and love.

We even discover a small pavilion that thrones above this beautiful landscape. Not a living soul around! This is so typical – because this place isn’t as famous as the Chess Pavilion, it doesn’t get any attention from most Chinese tourists.

The landscapes are breath-taking despite the fog. The mountains really radiate something sacred - just beautiful.

Then, we finally see the Chess Pavilion!

We borrow a climbing harness for about 20 yuan and climb down to the pavilion. If you ignore any safety concerns that arise when looking at the aged equipment, the descent is not that scary ;-)

Unfortunately, the weather is not ideal, fog (no smog, yeah!) steals us the magnificent view. And yet: The feeling of sitting in this small pavilion with a stone chessboard and looking at the surrounding mountains is indescribable.

After a while, we start our way back. Actually, the absolute highlight of the day still awaits us:
The hike on the **Plank Road in the Sky** holds the nicknames **Devils Plank** or **Most Dangerous Hike in the World** not in vain.

So look forward to nerve-wracking moments – we can tell you one thing: we survived it ;-)

Danach schlendern wir noch gemütlich durch Xi’an und über die Stände im Muslimischen Viertel.

Nachmittags gehen wir dann zum Busbahnhof, um nach Huashan zu fahren. Dort werden wir eine Nacht bleiben und eine große Wanderung machen, wir kommen also endlich einmal weg von den Megastädten und rein in die Natur!
Das Gebirge ist wegen seiner **wunderschönen Felswände und nervenaufreibenden Wanderungen in schwindelerregenden Höhen** berühmt. Im Gebirge gibt es vier erschlossene Gipfel: Der North, South, East und West Peak. Wir haben alle auf dem Programm!
Klingt gut? Also, los geht’s!

Wir kommen abends nach 3 Stunden Busfahrt in dem kleinen Ort an und finden auf Anhieb unser Hotel.
Morgens bringt uns ein Taxi zum Visitor Center, dort kaufen wir Tickets und entscheiden uns für die Gondel zum North Peak.

Die Gondelfahrt ist nichts für schwache Nerven…

Auf dem North Peak angekommen, stellen wir glücklich fest, dass sehr wenig los ist – wir sind auch früh dran, es ist erst 08:00 Uhr morgens.

Wir genießen die Aussicht, die klare Luft und die angenehmen Temperaturen. Dann geht es weiter zum East Peak, dort befindet sich das berühmte **Chess-Pavillion**. Der „Wanderweg“ besteht ausschließlich aus Treppen – typisch chinesisch eben.
Nach unzähligen Treppen machen wir eine erste Frühstückspause mit wundervoller Aussicht.

Unzählige Rote Bänder und Schlösser säumen die Wege und symbolisieren ewiges Glück und Liebe.

Wir entdecken sogar einen kleinen Pavillon, der verlassen über dieser wunderschönen Landschaft thront. Weit und breit keine Menschenseele!

Die Landschaften sind trotz Nebel atemberaubend. Das Gebirge strahlt wirklich etwas Heiliges aus – einfach wunderschön.

Dann erblicken wir endlich das Chess-Pavillion!

Wir leihen uns für ca. 20 Yuan eine Sicherung und klettern den Klettersteig zum Pavillon herab. Wenn man jegliche Sicherheitsbedenken, welche beim Blick auf die in die Jahre gekommene Ausrüstung aufkommen, ausblendet, ist der Abstieg gar nicht so beängstigend ;-)

Leider ist das Wetter nicht ideal, Nebel (kein Smog, juhu!) versperrt uns ein wenig die Sicht. Und trotzdem: Das Gefühl, in diesem kleinen Pavillon mit steinernem Schachbrett zu sitzen und auf die umliegenden Gebirge zu blicken, ist unbeschreiblich.

Nach einer Weile machen wir uns auf den Rückweg. Das absolute Highlight des Tages steht uns schließlich noch bevor:
Die Wanderung auf dem **Plank Road in the Sky** trägt seinen Spitznamen **Devils Plank** oder **Most Dangerous Hike in the World** nicht ganz zu unrecht.

WOW! How amazing! I am returning to Guangzhou in April and have been considering a visit to Xi'an in July when my work contract is over! This looks absolutely beautiful!

I think that it takes approx. 3 h.
We would recommend you to go there for a whole day and stay at a hotel. You can do this as daytrip from Xi'an, but then, you'll only be on the mountain at noon, an then, everything will be soooooo crowded! (We made that experience when walking back to the cablecar-station in the afternoon - it was horrible!
By staying at a hotel in Huashan, we could start early in the morning and had the mountains to (almost) ourselves until noon - that was wonderful :)
Another highlight at Huashan is the "Plankwalk in the sky" - we will talk about this in our next post. This really is a must-do (even if nerve-racking)!
