From my perspective, our forests can be considered as being the lungs of the earth and if we cut them down carelessly, in essence, we are removing a vital organ from the earth – we are compromising how it functions! Many loggers do not cut down trees simply for the utilization of its resources, instead their main aim is to generate a profit from their harvest, and they have become greedy! Whereas once the logs were used for local survival and for basic needs (furniture and paper and so on), these days the raw materials are sold abroad for a hefty profit.

Legal logging companies require a permit to cut down trees, with the agreement that the trees will be replaced and the forests cared for. The problem lies with people who are cutting down the trees illegally, using methods that harm the environment. Our forests are a collection of trees, plants and other ecosystems, all playing a role in setting a natural balance. When illegal deforestation is practised, the natural environment is upset and ecosystems are compromised.

One of the consequences of illegal logging is flooding, since the methods they use do not include sound and studied practises. When trees are removed from the ground, especially in large quantities, there is nothing to hold the sediment in that area, causing it to run off into neighbouring farmlands. Also, the roots of the trees hold a lot of the water that falls, leaving the soil drier to absorb more water. When the trees are removed, the soil cannot hold all of the rainfall, which results in flooding. In turn, these floods put many people and their homes in danger, as well as disturbing farming practises!

The forests that we have must be preserved and should not be used in vain, if we demolish all of our forest land, we are sure to be threatened with disaster! As individuals, we can help prevent deforestation by only practising logging with a permit and sticking to the laws and guidelines. We must also remember to plant new trees when we cut one down, this is very important. If anyone is cutting down trees in your area, please report them?
