Our lives are changing by the day and there is so much that the future beholds for the human race. </p> <p>The need of the hour however, is shifting away from the use of fossil fuels for our power needs. For this purpose many alternatives have been developed and some are in development that will change the way we generate power for our race.</p> <p>One of the most promising among them is solar power. The sun is the ultimate source of power without which there would be no life on earth. And since it is not going anywhere for billions of years, it would be wise to harness its power. </p> <h1>Current Solutions</h1> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/f31b58e1f7.jpg" width="485" height="323"/></p> <p>We have been harnessing the sun’s power for quite some time now using technologies like Photovoltaic systems that use solar panels in solar farms or rooftops of the houses. These panels convert the sunlight directly into electric power. </p> <p>Another alternative is that of Concentrated solar power which basically utilises the heat from the sunlight to convert water into steam which is then used to generate electricity via turbines.</p> <p>Over the years the efficiency of these technologies have increased a lot and their costs have decreased too making solar power a prime candidate of alternative energy. </p> <p>But the problem with current solutions is that they require ‘extra’ space to be installed either on a solar form or in houses and end up being intrusive. Also, they are not too aesthetically pleasing and installation costs can be a little high (though it is getting cheaper with time).</p> <h1>Enter Energy-Harvesting Window Panes</h1> <p><br></p> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/f3132aa8ad.jpg" width="570" height="318"/></p> <p>This is something straight our of science fiction. Researchers at the University of Minnesota and University of Milano-Bicocca have developed a technique to achieve solar power generation using the windows in our homes. </p> <p>The windows remain as transparent as ever and let the same amount of light inside the rooms and still manage to generate electricity using the sunlight. For this purpose, the windows are coated with a thin film which is made by embedding silicon particles on to luminescent solar concentrators. </p> <p>The result is photovoltaic windows that generates electricity without needing any extra space for solar panels or complex systems which also takes care of the aesthetics problem.</p> <p>Imagine a skyscraper using this technology. Options for renewable energy technology are becoming so cheap and effective that the centralized utility structure will be forced to regulate it into oblivion to stay alive. I'm waiting for that. I say decentralized option wins, because its resilience is superior and demand is exponentially greater. The future will be homes with greenhouses for heat/cool air regulation and food production, solar and wind for energy, and water catching gray-water septic systems. That's my view anyway.
