Aussie’s in the USA - Part 1 - Honolulu, Hawaii - The arrival and first day

## Gold Coast, Australia to Honolulu, Hawaii

Part 1 of our journey began on the Gold Coast. We arrived at the airport to find that our Qantas flight down to Sydney had been delayed and it looked, for a moment, that we might miss the connection from Sydney to Honolulu. Fortunately we made it with about 20 minutes to spare (talk about cutting it fine) and lined up to board the flight.

Flying overnight on the red-eye seems like a simple thing to do, unless you have two kids with you. It all started out well as we grabbed our seats and entered the 10 hour flight full of beans and excitement.

As the flight left at 7.30pm, the kids were ready to sleep an hour into the flight and we had to accomodate their sprawling bodies before our meals had even started being served. After a not-too-bad meal of tasty chicken and mashed palenta, I washed it all down with a vodka and ginger beer and then a bourbon and coke. This allowed me to fall into a deep sleep for the rest of the journey.....well for a few hours at least.

After a restless 9 hours we arrived at the airport at 8.30am on the same day (thanks to the International Date Line), grabbed our baggage from the airport and headed for the hotel. After unpacking and getting our togs on, we went straight to the beach and pool for a swim. It was relaxing and well earnt after a busy year, however, I started to nod off so decided to get the gang together and walked down to the Duke statue in central Waikiki.

We stopped for lunch at the famous Duke’s restaurant and grabbed some Nachos before visiting the local supermarket to stock up on turkey bacon and other breakfast necessities.

One of the most notable disappointments after one day in the USA is the coffee. Unless you are prepared to seek out a Starbucks, then the only coffee I have found so far is the brew house type, a far cry from what I am used to in Australia.

After more swimming and relaxing, we found a cosy little street truck venue just down the road from the hotel where we gorged on Tacos for dinner.

Finally,our heads hit the pillow at 8pm and we slept through for a solid 12 hours after the red-eye flight had smashed our sleeping patttern.
