<p>Reminder that, April 18, is the tax-filing deadline. &nbsp;The Internal Revenue Service has received 103.6 million 2016 individual income tax returns as of April 7 and expects millions more to be filed by the April 18 deadline.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;If You exchanged Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other alt coin for cash you should report capital gains to the IRS. &nbsp;&nbsp;For example, if you bought Bitcoins with U.S. dollars and later sell them for U.S. dollars, a capital gain or loss needs to be reported on that transaction. &nbsp;Cryptocurrency are consider a capital asset and should use capital gain or loss tax treatment on&nbsp;sales and exchanges. Below are the marginal capital gains tax rates for 2016:</p>

<p>Two very important misconceptions about taxes and cryptocurrency I want to point out:</p>
<h2>1) Your income brackets <em>include</em> the crypto gains. The gains are then <em>subtracted</em> back out and then taxed at the capital gains tax rate.</h2>
<p>There is a huge misconception that you won't pay any tax on your earnings if you make less than $9,275 a year. But any gain made off crypto gets added into your income and then taken back out and taxed accordingly. So if your crypto gains pushes you over that threshold, you will be taxed on those gains.</p>
<h2>2) Do not avoid paying your taxes on cryptocurrency</h2>
<p>With the idea of a decentralized currency, the idea of paying taxes to the government might seem laughable. But there are many wealthy people who thought the same thing about there Swiss bank accounts that are currently sitting in jail. If you get caught it is a felony criminal conviction and maybe some time in a Federal prison. Just comply with the law like everyone else and pay your taxes!</p>
