<html> <p>Hornbeer is located in North Zealand in Denmark, more specifically outside the little village Kirke Hyllinge not far from Roskilde. The brewery is run by the married couple Jørgen Fogh Rasmussen and Gunhild Rasmussen. Jørgen is responsible for production while Gunhild manages the administrative tasks and also makes the paintings that adorn Hornbeer's amazing labels.</p> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/e063f988d2.jpg" width="800" height="800"/></p> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/e063fcce03.jpg" width="820" height="489"/></p> <p>The brewery was founded in 2008 but burned down the same year. In 2009, however, it was reopened and was named Denmark's best brewery by the association Danish Beer Enthusiasts. An achievement they repeated in 2010, 2011 and 2013. In addition to this, the brewery has won a large number of awards in Denmark as well as at many international competitions and fairs. Of course, quality and taste is at the heart of Hornbeer. The alcohol content is often relatively high, but it's in balance with the other taste parameters in a way that creates elegant and concentrated beers with great depth and complexity. The brewery offers a very large assortment, with over 30 beers in total.</p> <h2>Hornbeer Caribbean Rumstout</h2> <p>This imperial stout has been brewed with 5 different types of barley malt, oats, sugar, a good amount of hops, spices and coffee. In addition to all this it has been aged on rum casks.</p> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/e0640c12dd.jpg" width="820" height="894"/></p> <p><strong>Origin:</strong> Kirke Hyllinge, Denmark<br> <strong>Brewery:</strong> Hornbeer<br> <strong>Style:</strong> Imperial Stout<br> <strong>ABV:</strong> 10%<br> <strong>IBU (International Bitterness Units):</strong> 86<br> <em>500 ml bottle</em></p> <p><strong>Appearance:</strong> Beige brown foam. The liquid is viscous, dark brown and opaque.</p> <p><strong>Nose: </strong>The scent is big and intense with both sweet and roasted notes. Elements of rum-raisin and dates together with phenolic soap notes. There's also some faint smoke in the background. Probably one of the five barley varieties has been smoked.</p> <p><strong>Palate:</strong> Extremely rich flavors of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. The rum is nicely hidden, or well integrated I should say, and adds a well-needed sweetness and depth to all the roasted notes and hefty bitterness. The oat gives it a quite creamy mouth-feel. Some tartness of dried fruit around the edges. I'm pleased to find the light smoke from the nose also on the palate.</p> <p><strong>Finish: </strong>Finally the rum makes itself known. The long aftertaste is dominated by sweet rum accompanied by a serious kick of bitterness.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> A very complex beer that, despite the many competing aromas, feels very solid and extremely well balanced. A slow-sipping beer to share with a friend or a loved one.
